Baby hates books - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

I know this is a strange thread, but I'm wondering if any one else has experienced this? I've never heard of such a thing.

DD HATES books. She's 9 months now and will cry every time I try and read to her. I feel so bad. I read to her bother every day from the day he was born. In her 9 mnoths she's probably had a book read to hear from start to finish 3 times. And I'm talking the 6 page baby books. I've tried holding her, not holding her, letting her hold the book. She just doesn't like it.

I'm sure she won't spend her entire life not reading, but like I siad, have any of you gone through this? It's so strange.

My son did not really care for books either. I kept getting a lot of slack from family about not reading to him. He just hated it. I would keep trying once a day but did not push it. If he cried I just stopped.

I think he did not like the books becasue he was more interrested in the "big picture" of the world. He did not like to only focus on a small thing, when he could be exploring the whole room.

He now loves books and reads them all day. Mabye your DD is the same way?

My son was the same way, and as someone who majored in English in college, reads eveyrthing in sight, and works parttime as a writer, this was quite the blow...

I just kept trying and now at the age of five he reads or tries to read everything in sight. Some days DH and I wish he would knock it off.

I too have experienced this. My DD didn't want anything to do with books as a baby. We tried everything, and then one day I just finally said "enough is enough". Why push it, ya know? I figured that if we pushed her into books when she didn't like them, then in the end, this could make her not like them for good. And now she's 2 and a half years old, and has tons and tons of books and can't go an hour it seems without plopping down on the floor to read one. She loves them to death! So it's probably just a phase that will pass. She's probably so busy trying to learn other things, that sitting there to look at a book isn't as fun as watching or doing something else. I wouldn't worry one bit about it. Like you said, she won't always not want to read.

Liam sometimes gets too excited if we read. I think he likes it but I can't really tell. He starts kicking his legs and wheeling his arms and making whooping noices. I don't read to him before bed because it does not calm him. If we read too long, he gets cranky.

Maybe I should read to him in the morning.
