Question how long can an infant survive without Amniotic fluid

How long can an infant survive without Amniotic fluid after the mother lost it, without suffering brain damage or suffocate? A few hours, a few days?

Re: how long can an infant survive without Amniotic fluid

My water broke at 20 weeks and I managed to do okay until 26 weeks. I believe that if the doctors had given me an amnioinfusion (artificial amniotic fluid introduced into the uterus through a catheter) I may have held out longer.

I was told its dangerous 24hrs after your water broke. I guess it depends on how much you are leaking? My SIL just had her baby and her water broke at 37wks. They gave her antibiotics and told her she could wait 2 days before they had to do a section. She never went into labor and ended up with the section.

A mother is always producing more amnoitic fluid. The problems that arise are infections and cord problems. The may also have intestional and lung issues if there isn't enough.

I was induced because my amniotic fluid was getting very low. They never actually said what kind of problems I could encounter if they didn't though.
