Is my 2 month old sucking correctly? - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Where should I start? I tried breastfeeding my infant, but he wouldn't suck correctly. I went to 3 Lactation consultants, but things didn't work out. After breastfeeding for a month, she wasn't putting on the proper amount of weight so I put her on the bottle with pumped breast milk. She started gaining weight and is thriving. The problem with the bottle is that she always makes these clicking noises when she eats. It's the same noise she was making when she was trying to breastfeed. She is only eating anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 oz every 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. Her eating is so random. She gets a lot of gas in her from bottle feeding. I tried 4 different kinds of nipples, but it seems like the small 2 oz. bottles the hospitals give is the easiest for her to eat from. I tried the faster flow ones, but she chokes and the slow flow just makes her work really hard for the milk. Too hard. No matter what flow bottle I give, it seems like she keeps eating the same amount. She's 2 months old now and has been eating the same amount for a month now. I'm wondering if she's not eating correctly and inhaling too much air that is preventing her from eating more. I burp her often while feeding, but she still doesn't eat more. I'm so tired of getting up every 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours to feed her. What is it supposed to sound like when the baby is bottle feeding? She inhales a lot and her suck is strong, but her toung clicks all the time. Please help. Is she ever going to take in more milk? Also, when is she going to sleep longer? I keep reading that at this age their supposed to eat 3-5 oz and sleep 4-5 hours! It seems like she's never going to get there.

I dont know about the clicking thing, but thought I woul tell you, that my ds took 2 oz, every 2-3 hrs til bout 3 months or so. He is now 6 months, and eats solids, but will take 5-6 oz, and still eat every 3 hrs, give or take. good luck, wish I could have more info.

I remember when I met with my lactation consultant that the clicking sound is a sign of improper latch. I don't what causes it. When my DS starts making that clicking or smacking sound, I pull him off and have him re-latch, and it usually fixes is. My DS must be a pig becuase he eats at least 3 oz, usually 4 every 3 hours during the day and longer during the night. He's only a month old!!!!

He isn't tongue tied is he? I figure that someone would have caught it by now, but you never know. I still take the low flow nipples and just cut them slightly larger. The fast flow ones make DD gag at almost 11 months, they are just a bit too big.

You may want to try putting the nipple in furtherinto her mouth. The plastic rim should be close or touching her lips.
