Starting to get concerned about rolling thing....

DS is turning 5 months old right away and I'm starting to really wonder if he'll ever roll over on his own. For a while, he'd do it if I helped put his arms under him. I'd set them underneath his chest and he'd do the front to back thing. Then he just stopped. He takes them back out and just go back down on his face and cries. He kicks a tonne, and arcs his back up really far on his stomach but that's it. He pushes his arms up a bit. No rolling. He still goes into hysterics most of the time when I put him on his belly. Even from back to front he won't roll. I've seen him get kind of close but then he just quits. I don't know at this point if he just can't figure it out, can't physically do it or just doesn't even care to try. I've read in a few places many of them can do if fairly well by now. When have some of the other babies out there got into that and when do you start to worry if they won't?

Re: Starting to get concerned about rolling thing....

This is my first, so I can't give you much advice, but my son just rolled over belly to back today for the first time. He's just under 3mos. At your next appointment just ask your doctor if this is normal or not. I am sure the more experienced moms will chime in soon.

Re: Starting to get concerned about rolling thing....

DS is almost 8 months and he is just starting to be interested in crawling. He was never interested in being on the floor or in rolling over. I know that he knows how to roll over but he doesn't just roll across the floor to play. I figure he will get there on his own pace. I would not worry about it too much. And if I before he showed an interest in crawling he would pitch a fit if I put him on the floor laying down.

Re: Starting to get concerned about rolling thing....

I would mention it to the pediatrician but really it's probably nothing to worry about some kids skip certain milestones altogether, we were sure my dd would walk before she crawled, and she almost did. Everyone goes at thier own pace. Just keep trying with the tummy time...a trick I used was I'd put ds on the floor on his playgym mat first thing every morning (when he was in the best mood) I'd lay down there with him and rattle his toys and encourage him, when he'd get close to rolling I'd gently give him a little help so he would eventually figure out that he could do it alone....I'd let him play on the floor until he got mad enough and then I'd pick him up and do something else...or alot of times just rolling him over onto his back to play with the hanging toys he'd be happy with. But then I would make sure to try it again a bit later when he was in a better mood again. Kaden rolls from his belly to his back, but he isn't a pro at it yet, and he's rolled from his back onto his tummy about 6 or so times, but that one is tricky for him.
Goodluck.

Re: Starting to get concerned about rolling thing....

my dd is 4 months tomorrow and she makes no attempt to rollover I put her on her tummy but she hates it and does nothing but screams. What is the appropriate age that they should be hitting this milestone?
