Colic or just fussy? - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

My little girl is about 3 weeks old and the last few days it seems like she has cried constantly. She's been quite gassy, but not all of the time. My questions is, how can you tell when a baby is just being fussy and when it is colic? Any opinions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are you breastfeeding? If not she may have a sensitivity to milk protien, you may wanna try the Isomil, however it is really constapating, so we went to Lactose free and it has been awesome, no more gas, no more constipation and he poops..run this all by your dr first

Also gassynes is really common and they sauy babies out grow it after about 6 weeks

I'm doing a combination of breast feeding and formula. My milk supply is pretty low and she has difficulty latching sometimes, so she usually bf's for about 20 minutes and then takes a bottle. We are currently using Enfamil w/ iron, but have been considering switching to Prosobee which is a soy based formula that is lactose free, but my doctor hasn't suggested switching and I'm afraid of switching to something that makes her feel worse. I guess I should just call my dr. tomorrow and see what she thinks. Or maybe it is just normal and she'll grow out of it in another three weeks. We'll see.

I say try changing the formula...soy worked well for us when ours were very gassy and crying in pain. Also try Gripewater. It doesn't work for everyone, but for those it does, it works miracles. You can also lay her down on her back and gentily pump her legs up and down. That will help get the gas moving and get it out.

Best of luck. DS cried for the first 3 months of his life...it was very hard!

Val what formula are you using exactly? I am using the enfamil hypoallergenic kind that is lactose free as well. Nutrimigen or something like that.... It is working really well - but I am not sure if I should switch to the just lactose free kind of enfamil... the nurse told me to just make sure it is lactose free - and the kind i found was the nutimigen or whatever it is... of enfamil.

Also, I saw a news story the other night on the soy formula - and they are saying it can or may cause reproductive problems later on in life now...
