lotions,asthama and age

My babies are 7 weeks old and I recently bought some of the bed time bath and lotion. The one that is supposed to relax the babies before bed time. Well, I was reading on the back of the bottle and it says not to use this product unless consulting the pedeatrician if anyone has a history of asthama. Well dh has asthama, and I was just wondering why do I have to consult the ped. first. I plan on asking the ped. on the girls next visit if I can use it or not but I'm just curious why I should not. And also, it says not to use it until they are 3 months old, they are 7 weeks old but were 5 weeks premature, so do I wait until they are 4 months old, or wait until they are three months? Considering the doctor says it's fine for them to use it.

Re: lotions,asthama and age

My doctor told me babies don't clinically have asthma until after 6mos of age. This is when it is most commonly diagnosed. DS currently has bronchitis type issues and they said asthma is not a concern until the baby is older. They do watch babies closer who have family history of asthma and allergies, but because a baby's immune system is still developing, and their air passages are so small, a simple cold can cause asthma like breathing.
I use the vapor wash on DS when he has a cold and it seems to really relax him. I also used it before he was 2 months old. Do your babies have colds? If they don't have a cold I wouldn't use it until speaking to your ped since the purpose is to help relieve congestion.

Re: lotions,asthama and age

Noel's Girl did you ever talk to your ped. about this? I was wondering the same thing since i got the same lotion and was reading the back. I have asthma and the doctor says DD is most likely developing it too. its the bedtime lotion and i love how it smells but she is only 4 weeks old tomorrow and i am scared to use it on her. I did use it on myself towards the end of my pregnancy and it didnt do anything to make my asthma flare as far as i could tell. Now im afraid to even use it on myself because i dont know what it could do to her. Her next appt is june 6 so i plan on asking her doc more about it then. Just thought i would check to see if maybe you got an answer. Thanks so much and take care!!!

Re: lotions,asthama and age

He said that they are just trying to take every precaution. I have been using it since they have turned 3 months with no negative results. He never really specified why they put that warning on the back, so I still really don't know what the big deal is. Hope I helped.

Re: lotions,asthama and age

IMO Fragrances in lots of products are not really good for us. To keep smelling all those strong chemicals may be why so many people have asthma and the like. I try and limit fragranced products in my house. I would not use something that puts a warning on it for any age. That's just me though.
