Independence.... - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Just out of curiosity, when did everyones babies start getting independent with activities. The other day I was trying to give Ds some juice from his sippy cup after his breakfast. I was trying to hold it for him because he hasn't quite figured out how to tip it up yet and he was flat out refusing to take it while I was holding it. He cried and turned away. The second I put it on his tray, he picked it up and put it in his mouth. I tried to help him again and sure enough, he cried and turned away. It took about three times like this before it clicked that it wasn't the cup or the juice he was turning down, it was my helping him that was the problem. I had no idea they did things like that at this age. lol In the end, he finally let me use my finger to help tip it up a little but beyond that forget it. Any other little ones doing this?

My DS is 13 months and he's been doing this for awhile. He never liked sippy cups so he drinks from regular cups and now he won't let me help him at all. He's pretty good at it though. He also has to feed himself with a spoon now. If I try to help him he refuses and won't eat the food. It's a little messier but he still gets most of it in his mouth. One thing I still won't let him be independant about in public is not taking my hand when we're walking. There's no way I'm just going to let him roam free in a crowded mall. But since he started walking he doesn't want to be restricted by mommy's hand. It's hard to let go but I'm glad he's mastering these skills.
