sleeps on top of pillow - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

we have a 1 1/2 week old girl that does not sleep in a bassinet or crib, she wakes up after 10min every time. but when we let her sleep on my chest like a frog shes gets knocked out, then we put her on top of a pillow with us on the bed and she can sleep thru most of the night, then ive been reading about SIDS and read its not good to put babies on a pillow or co-sleep. but weve been doing it for the last few days with no problems and being ever so careful with it. We put 3pillows in a row, she sleeps in the middle and we sleep on the sides of the outter pillows, we made sure there is no space in between the pillows to fall in as well. she dosnt roll over or anything yet ,just kicks and cries when she wakes up. should we stop doing it?

idk what to tell you, but did u try to put her to sleep on her belly in the bassinet? my son screamed bloody murder when he was an infant it was all cuz he liked layin on his belly, to this day, now almost 9 months he usually on his belly

I'm sure that people might jump all over this becasue of the risk of SIDS...however, I will admit that DD slept exactly like you are doing it in our bed for about 2 months. It was the only way to get her to sleep besides doing it "froggy style" on our chests. Been there!!! After that time she didn't want to sleep like that anymore and she moved into her crib with very little trouble or issues.

Will she sleep on her side? It's hard for a lot of them to sleep flat on their backs. They do make these things that you can put in your bed that the baby sleeps in to help keep them safe. If your mind isn't at ease that may help.

When babies are born they are not exactly ready to come out yet and the want the closeness. Read the book, "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp. She may be like this for a couple of months and I went through the same thing with my daughter. I read the book before she was born and so I understood that she just wanted to be held or be close. She is now 2 and a half months old I last night was the first time she slept on her own. Otheriwse since she was born I have slept with her in the arms while I sat up on the chaise portion of our couch. Now, I am finally getting to sleep laying down which I haven't done since I had her.

Also go to Wal-Mart and check out the co-sleepers. They are about $40 and the baby can sleep in that while she is in your bed. It had hard plastic barriers so you or your husband won't roll onto her as easily and it comes with a night light. Best if luck to you.

I agree that most babies do not like to sleep flat on their backs, especially on firm mattresses. Try tummy sleep. It works very well and I think would probably be safer than the pillow sleeping. The risk of SIDS for a newborn tummy sleeper is less than 1 in 1000 and for a newborn back sleeper about 1 in 1500. Other safer options could be having your baby sleep in his crib while in his carseat or having him sleep in his swing. I would include the headrest with either since they tend to sleep better with it. Propping her on her side or swaddling too if you like, though those options may not work quite as well as the others.
