Burping??? - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Hi, My DD is going to be 3 mos on the 21st and she is very hard to burp and get to sleep and I know they say to burp babies thoroughly or they get belly aches which she used to get alot of however sometimes I hate to wake her up after shes done taking an ounce or two of milk to burp her I dread it because I have a hard time getting her to sleep so when I actually do get her there I want to keep her there.. When is it ok to stop burping them till they wake up?

To be honest, I never burped my baby if she fell asleep during the feeding. I'm not sure whether it would have made a differnence or not. I never really detected that she was particularly uncomfortable if I didn't burp her.

I don't burp much either. Theoretically, a breast fed baby doesn't *need* to be burped because there is no air in our boobs. They only take in air with a bad latch, or if you have an over active let down and they choke and gurgle.

If the baby is taking a bottle then air intake is more likely to happen, but even then, I don't burp her much. Supposedly if they don't burp with in a minute or so they don't need to, and I figure if she's asleep for more then a minute without looking "gassy", then why wake a sleeping and happy baby?

But, if you think she's painfully gassy, which happens, then why not try some infant gas drops? I don't know what I do without that stuff. DD gets at least one dose in the evening. I find it works way better then gripe water. Way better.

I always burp DS and even if he does not burp right away he always does. I found that while he is asleep, I gently bounce him on my knee and this works. If you think she will wake up, another trick I learned is put them on your lap with thier left side closest to you. Lean the baby towards to..this puts pressure on the stomach area and brings up the burps without waking!

my ds is bottle fed, he is not easy to burp somtimes i find lying him down for a while then sitting him up ang burping him again works. sometimes if ds does not burp and falls asleep i just leave him. i use gripe water as well to try to ease trapped wind, i figure like me ds has a slow digestive tract as he also gets constipated i was just like him when i was a baby too.
