very small soft spot - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

my ds is just 3 days old and i noticed his soft spot is very very small and im wondering if this is normal. my other ds (7 yrs old) soft spot was MUCH bigger... i have a check up monday and i plan on asking about it then, and im trying not to worry to much till then- woulden't the pediatrician at the hospital have noticed if something was wrong? still i can't help but think that it should be bigger- it's barely there at all! has anyone elses baby had what seemed like an extremely small soft spot? any input will be appreciated.

Our DS also had a really small one and we were worried sick about it in the beginning thanks to some health nurses making a huge deal about it. It's been tiny since birth and at 9 months it's pretty much completely gone. I got three opinions from Drs again because the nurses freaked out, and all three of the Drs assured me that it really wasn't that big of a deal. All they'll do is keep monitering his head circumference like they normally do at all of his check-ups to make sure his head continues to grow steadily. I'm sure your doc will say the same thing. He has another checkup Monday so they'll probably check his again. So far no problems.

Wow, I was going to post the same thing! I noticed my second son has a very small soft spot as well. I couldn't even find it the other day! I remember with my first it was larger and more noticeably so I was worrying as well. He has his 2 month check-up and vaccinations next Monday and will be asking the Doc about it as well. I hope it's nothing....
Let us know what the Doc says, I'm curious to hear what they say.

well i asked his doc about it today... she said that it could be normal to have such a small soft spot, that probably it will just stick around longer and take longer to get even smaller. she's gonna keep an eye on it since it is so small and if it appears to have gotten smaller at his one month check up he'll have to get x-rays to make sure everything is ok. im hopeful that all is well and this is normal- if not the only option is surgery... but the doc didn't seem overly concerned and she seems to be a very good and meticulous doctor, so im going to try my best not to be concerned either.
