Can Babies Be Claustrophobic?

My moms baby is terrible when we go out. He fights to be put in the car seat and screams and carries on the whole time hes in the car! Last Saturday after everyone was in the car we had to turn the car off and get out because he just kept crying and carrying on. But weve noticed that if hes in the car with just my mother, or my mom and step dad he will be a total angel. I jokingly told my mom that he was Claustrophobic (like mom) and it got me to thinking: Can babies this young (hes 9 months) have this fear?

If not what can be causing this, its so annoying! Thanks!

P.S. For any of you reading lots of my posts, I have a 1 year old baby, my mom has a 9 month old, im 18 shes 35-36, just to clear things up

Re: Can Babies Be Claustrophobic?

Hi there .... Is the baby by itself most of the time in the back seat of the car? If so, maybe the baby is used to just being mellow back there - and when you add people that just disrupts his whole universe! hee hee! It could be over stimulating to the baby when there are extra people in the car?

Do you try to ignore the baby and be mellow? or do you try to entertain the baby when sitting in the back? My baby girl is 6 months and is used to being alone back there.... if I do sit with with her I don't entertain her just speak to her very mellow - and sometimes just let her hold my finger... my SIL is 21 and she rode in the back with my baby and I had to tell her to be mellow.... or she will get over stimulated and freak out.... LOL!

Re: Can Babies Be Claustrophobic?

Oh my god I was talking with my mom about this yesterday and I thought everyone would think I was nuts if I brought this up but my DD is 4 months old and hates her carseat, bouncy, seat and swing anything that traps her she flips out but she is fine laying in her playpen or on her mat on the floor.. I am extremely clausterphobic I cant stand being confined at all maybe I passed it on..
