insatiable thirst! - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Hi. My daughter, Brenna, is 14 months old. She is constantly thirsty! She drinks all the time! She would rather drink than eat,she throws fits and cries for water or for a drink. She wakes up in the middle of the night screaming for something to drink. I find this very odd...Also, along with this drinking issue, shes been having major mood swings. I've never known a baby to be so moody. Nothing will calm her. She will scream and throw herself around for no apparent reason. If I try and hold her, she makes herself go limp or she'll start hitting or kicking. She hardly sleeps at all anymore, it seems. I put her down to bed at 9pm and she will still be awake at midnight and then shes awake again at 4am and will be up until noonish. I'm worried and I cant seem to find any info on the web. I dont know if the thirst, the tantrums and the sleeping have anything to do with each other but my goodness, Im pulling my hair out here! I dont know what to do with her. Any suggestions? ilovemysailor, You may want to talk to your ped about her thirst. My cousin experienced the same thing and my aunt took him to the dr and found that he was diabetic. Why it was effecting his thirst so much I'm not sure, but it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out.

I don't know about the thirst, but my 14 mo. old is sooo moody too. She tells me no, kicks and screams sometimes too. I have also noticed that her eating habits are changing, she used to be my little piggy but now she is picky. I think it must be a phase.

Hi,

I would also recommend going to the doctor. The moodiness by itself could just be a stage but the thirst could be a signal of something else. Get her to a doc. and rule out everything. Then, you may be able to sleep better.

I would also take her to see the doctor..just to be on the safe side. A neighbor of mine went through the same thing with their toddler and it turned out the insatiable thirst was being caused by diabetes.
