allergies?

dd is five months old and i am starting to think that she may have allergies! i think i am also starting to get them as well! . today both of our eyes are red itchy swollen and watery. i have noticed that there have been quite a few times that this has happened to her and i have not given it a second thought since she sometimes still has trouble with her blocked tear duct, the only thing is is that this is in the other eye. she has also been trying to scratch at her nose and rub it often on my shirt. can babies get allergies this young? she has an appt on tuesday, should i just wait until we go and mention it to her pedi? thanks for any help! oh yeah-she has also been suffering from a cold, but this just showed up this morning. and she has had her cold since monday or so.could this be related?

Re: allergies?

They say that they can't develop allergies at that age. I have to disagree. My DD now 2 has shown signs of allergies since she was the age of your little one. When we would go outside and it still happens. Her eyes will swell and get watery, and she would get red bloches all over her face and her nose would run. A few times we have been to the greenhouse in our area to buy plants. She would get really bad. One time we where a a dental office that had a flower that was very strong in smell. My DD was having a hard time breathing. She is still having problems with all of this. We had an allergy test done at 9 months. Her ped this whole time has told me that this is very uncommon and they don't really develop allergies until they are one. She sent us to the specailist anyways saying the was very werid and it did sound like allergies. When we got there they too thought i was crazy. They did a test anyways and was neg. Told me if she is still having signs of allergies at 2 to have her retested. I could give her 1/2 tsp of clartin daily to help with her symptoms. So thats what we have been doing since is was 9 months. Now she takes 2 teaspoons daily. We have had alot of problems lately with a runny nose. Dr gave two rounds of antibotic to see if that would clear it up. If now she will refer us to a allergy specialist again. (Different Ped from the 1st one that sent us.) She doesn't like to have the test run until she is 5 due to them being not accurate until then. She said that even the test she had before could of been a false neg. She doesn't really see accurate results until they are older. She said if she doesn't get better then she will have her tested again now. Now at this point we have used all the other things possible. Not only does she take clartin daily she is also on nasonex daily. Sorry this probably doesn't help you at all. This has been my experience with the whole allergy stuff. She also has asthma. So she takes a daily inhaler and then we have a quick relief inhaler in case of an attack. The doctor says they kinda of go together. Allergies and asthma. Good luck with this.

Re: allergies?

thanks so much for your reply. i'm sorry to hear about all the troubles you have had with your dd. you've definately been through alot! i hate to see my dd go down the same road but i thank you for sharing your experience. unfortunately we think my dd does/will have asthma. i had it BADwhen i was little! i never had allergies until last year, but i am allergic to mold, maybe she is the same? so when you had the allergy test done what exactly happened? do they still use that big thing with needles to the back? or was that only 'back in the day'? lol! i will definately be asking my doctor about this on tuesday. how old do they have to be before they can take claritan? they sell it otc right?

Re: allergies?

My DD was nine months when she started the clartin. I would ask your doctor on tuesday and see if that is something that she is old enough for now. If they think i will help. I have been told that clartin is a watered down benyadral.

When my DD was tested for allergies they did the needles in her back. They where very very fast about it. They made me hold her aganist me and they they started. It wasn't until about half way through it she reliezed what was going and and started crying. They stuck her with about 30 different things. It all came back neg. They said that didn't mean she won't have allergies. My ped also said that the test is very accurate at that age. More accurate the older they are.

I wish you the best with this. It has been a long journey for us. We have already spent 3 days in the hospital for breathing problems. So i hope all goes better for you guys.

Re: allergies?

Our Dr. also says that allergies don't develop until 1yr. DS has red itchy eyes when outside and is also very sensitive to purfumes/soaps etc.
