I am a stay at home mom, so that means that no one else helps me out with my daughter but my husband but when he gets home from work. I have come down with the cold, it is not the flu because I don't feel achy or have a fever, but I do have a sore throat and stuffy nose. But she has been sneezing alot but she has not been fuzzy at all. But I was wondering other than trying to disinfect myself everytime I hold her is there anything else that I can try and give her over the counter or anything I can do to try and avoid from her to get sick. Her Dr. can not see her until Monday and I am afraid it would be to late. I thank your reads and appreciate your responses.
ur baby will more then likely get it as my oldest son gets colds all the time and my ds gets them too.....
my dr recommended me not give ds anything till he was over 6 months and then he was against that too...hes a big believer in no otc medication till 1 yrs but..........
good luck
we have had colds here for ovr 2 weeks and my youngest son ( 1yrs) just started with the flemmy cough and he makes faces everytime he coughs it up.
I agree with Tracy. It will probably happen and there is little if anything you can do besides the frequent hand washing. There is also nothing your doctor can really do to help you prevent it or cure it if he gets one. You can give him Tylenol if he gets it and is uncomfortable. It is also a good idea to have a cool mist humidifier in his room near his crib to help him breathe at night. Your doctor or nurse can show you how to suction his nose if that is necessary as well. You may also want to watch him for an increase in fussiness or crying, very frequent waking and/or a fever which starts after teh cold has begun. Those are all signs of an ear infection which often follow a cold.
You can't 100% avoid a cold. I know how you feel though, I had major anxiety about dd catching a cold but after she got her first cold my anxiety lessened. Colds are a part of life, she will catch bugs that are airborn and no matter how much disinfecting of your hands you do, your sneezes shoot out the virus at 100mile an hour! Unfortunately your dr can't do anything for babies even if they've caught a cold virus...
Remember that colds build up the immune system. Keeping your bubba at home on the off chance she catch may catch a cold if you go out is not healthy. Babies love going out and socialising. Have fun with your baby enjoying social outings
I agree with the previous posters. Colds, although frustrating at the time, do help build up the immune system. By the way Sherbet, I call my dh bubba all the time....it was funny to me when you said that.
my ds just had a cold poor dear. i caught it from him i feel like death warmed up so god knows how poorly he must have felt. i gave him baby paracetamol- calpol and tixilyx cough medicine - i hate drugs! we used it with ds for 4 days then as he started to improve - since yesterday i have not given him anything else. i think it is good he is building his immunune system it is his first cold and believe me it upset me when everytime he looked at me he was in tears. i don't think anything will prevent a child getting a cold i think any efforts to try prevent it may be to no avail of course general hygiene such as washing hands and not coughing or sneezing over you baby are probably the most you can hope to do. hope you get better and your bubba - i use that word too lol, does not catch that cold
My exclusively breastfed daughter did not get sick when I had a VERY bad cold at 6 months. I would think a formula fed baby would get sick, however, many breastfed babies do not. The reason is because when they nurse they are putting saliva on your nipples which is absorbed through the sinuses and then causes the body to immedietly make antibodies. Those antibodies are then available within 4 hours through your breastmilk.
My son was breastfed for the first few weeks, and unfortunately is now formula fed. He's 8 months and has not been sick once *knock on wood* although DH and I have been sick quite a few times. He's not sheltered by any means either, he comes to work with me and we go shopping alot lol.
Do you mean in regards to breastfeeding? If that's what you mean, I didn't have the knowledge I do now regarding my milk supply coming in, and staying in. I saw lactation consultant after lactation consultant who didn't give me correct information. My round the clock pumping was "unnecessary" and I NEEDED to supplement (and I wonder why on earth I kept pumping less and less).. He was breastfed almost exclusively for the first 3 weeks and on and off for a few weeks after that (if I remember the time frames correctly). I miss it, there are times I wish I could go to the dr and have her load me up on herbs and supplements to get my milk back in, but it's too late.. Man, I feel stupid, just writing this makes me realize how dense I was about everything.. Deffinitely something I wish I could take back
strange because my ff son (he was bf for 3 weeks) this is his first cold. whereas my niece exclusively bf is always getting colds. i think it is just luck! i think my 3 weeks bm must have been dynamite to his immune system then lol.

Don't beat yourself up, you don't deserve it. You did what you could. I'll start another thread about induced lactation, I don't want to hyjac this one.

Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. My DD was also exclusively BF for 7 months, but she caught lots of colds, usually passing them on to me rather than the other way round. It's horrible when they get a cold, especially when they are very little as they don't know how to clear the phlegm and end up vomiting up their milk, but as others have said, it does help to build up their immune system. Most babies are remarkably resilient and are over their colds in a few days, so as long as you can be patient and give your baby a few extra cuddles when s/he's feeling poorly, they'll be right as rain before you know it.
