5 month old stopped sleeping thru nite - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Hi everyone

My 5 1/2 month old has been sleeping anywhere from 6-9 hours at night since he was 3 months old. He is a formula baby, unfortunatly I had to quit breastfeeding early due to medication I was on. Suddenly he has been waking up 2-3 times during the night. In the past if he woke up he would cry and I would give him his paci and pat his back and he would fall back to sleep immedietly. Now he wakes and doens't cry, just rolls over and starts playing and cooing. He is all wide awake by the time I realize he is no longer asleep. I try to pat his back and put him back to sleep and it takes up to 10-30 minutes to get him back. I did feed him one night since he started crying and he drank 6 oz. But he doesn't act hungry just playful. He drinks a lot during the day. I just started solilds yesterday but he still woke up 3 times. Any advice on the situation? I don't think he is teething, he shows lots of teething signs but no actual teeth. I work full time and we get up early to got to daycare so I really need my sleep. OF course if it is hunger I will feed him on the overnight, but I am not sure that is the problem. Normally when he is hungry he screams. Thanks

Turn off your baby monitor if he sleeps close enough to your room and go back to sleep. As long as he is in his crib, isn't crying or upset, he should be fine till he's ready to go back to sleep. My ds did the same thing at the same age. I made the mistake of nursing him back to sleep and had to continue doing it for a few months. Now I just go in if he's crying and give him his soother. If he doesn't stop crying I pick him up and try to avoid cuddling in the feeding position. If that doesn't work, I give in and nurse him so we can all go back to sleep...I have to get up to go to work too!!!
One thing suggested here to me was to provide some safe toys for him to play with as well as a few soothers in his bed so he's sure to find one.

I think babies go through this phase because they are becoming more aware of their world, and they don't want to miss anything!

Someone else just asked something like this on a thread I wrote in on too........My son did this all the time when he was learning to do something new. Likek what Jordan said, leave him if he isn't crying.......he'll get the hang of it.

My 5 month old just started the same thing!!! She did get 2 teeth this week but she really isn't fussy just awake at either 5:30 or 6:00: Sometimes around 3:00 she whines!dizzy: She was sleeping 8:00 pm until 7:30 am. WHat happened to that?????

I hope things change soon, I was getting spoiled!!! Hopefully it is just a phase~
