Newborn Throwing Up

My DD is 12 days old and has been throwing up her feedings since she was born. I am bottle feeding her. Here is the story. In the hospital they started her on Similac. She was taking 1.5-2ozs every 2 hours but almost every feeding she was spitting or throwing up. She is very hard to burp and does not burp very often. The Dr said to try it for 3 min and if she doesn't to keep feeding her. In the hospital I switched her formula to Enfamil and it seemed to help. But after 24 hours she was once again throwing up. When I say she throws up almost every feeding she literally throws up. It isn't spit up, her stomach convulses and she throws up. So I talked to the Dr and switched her to Enfamil LIPIL AR, which is to help acid reflux. So far she has thrown up 2x since being on this formula. She throws up at least her last 2 feedings if not more and it looks like cottage cheese. Initially the Dr said she had a lot of fluid in her from being born via c-section, then they said acid reflux. I thought acid reflux myself because she is always hungry, the throwing up and spitting up and she is occasionally constipated. But she has been on the AR formula for 4 days now and I don't feel like things have changed enough for that to be the answer. She is still very hungry and has thrown up 2x. What do you think this is? Has anyone dealt with this or with acid reflux? Does this sound like acid reflux? Watching her throw up is aweful and the Dr and the nurses at the hospital, don't seem as horridfied as I am. I also don't think they believe me that she is throwing up, I think that they think it is just spit up.

Re: Newborn Throwing Up

DS did the same and we started giving him Mylicon gas drops after every feeding and that stopped his throwing up. You can give the drops upto 12 times in a day so giving it after every feeding helped. You can try and see if they help. I also bottle fed him and he took Enfamil Lipil with Iron.

Re: Newborn Throwing Up

My son is bf but when I did give him formula he through every once of it up!!! Tunrs out he is lactose intolerant right now. So they recomended Isomil which is made by similac (I think) and is made of Soy. I haven't tried it yet but will soon. I am hoping he will out grow the lactose thing before I start cows milk. My girlfriends baby had acid reflux and puked lots everytime she fed. Apparently the little flap that stops the acid from coming up isn't always fully grown causing baby to spit or throw up all the time. The baby does grow fine it is just an awful mess to deal with all the time. It does evently stop.

Re: Newborn Throwing Up

It does sound like reflux to me. My DS#3 was a preemie, and reflux is a big problem for preemies, but full termers can have trouble too. Our doctor gave us a prescription for medication to ease the reflux. I was terrified that he would throw up in his sleep and choke or aspirate it. The medication worked well. I know a lot of people don't want to medicate such small babies, but in the case of reflux, the esophogus can't really heal if the baby is continually throwing up.

Re: Newborn Throwing Up

I totally know what you are talking about because my DS did the SAME thing for the first week he was home. I was feeding him Similac and the stuff the hospital gave me, but rigth after every feeding it would all come up...all over me. It wasn't a little bit, but the ENTIRE bottle. It totally freaked me out the third time he did it....and he was losing weight too.

Well, I went to my doc, and he put my son on a soy formula and gave him some gas drops. This helped soooo much and my son is now the plump little boy I know!

I honestly think milk is very hard for babies to digest, and even milk based formulas can be rough too.....did you try a soy formula?

I hope your baby feels better soon!!
