The reappearing rash???? - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

My DD is 14 months old and her daycare called me at work today to tell me she had a rash the size of a small fist on her upper arm. I went over there on my lunch break real quick to check on her and they said it had already disappeared, but they had drawn with marker around it in case it reappeared. Well I went back to work and 2 hrs. later they called me again to let me know that she had broken out again, this time on her legs and bottom. I couldn't go pick her up for another hour, so by the time I got there it was already pretty much gone, her legs were just barely pink.

What does this kind of rash mean? Does anyone have an idea? It's just weird that it comes and goes so fast. She has never had one before, so I have no clue. All I can think of is it's a food allergy, but I or the daycare has not fed her anything new (I asked them). They said they gave her pineapples and they were a little more juicy than usual...could it have been the citrus?

Any suggestions would help me right now. Thanks!

Hi Brooke! Sorry you are going through this mystery rash. My stepdaughter used to get rashes like that and the were from her skin coming in contact with something she was allergic to. I particularly remember once when we were doing a school project and had to use some muslin cloth. She broke out where she touched it, it was itchy and was gone soon. Maybe check to see if there is some new carpet or carpet squares. Also ask them about any new toys, someone wearing a new perfume etc. My guess would be something new in the environment that she is sensitive to, but I could be wrong! I could be food but if she hasn't had anything new, then I doubt it. Maybe an already introduced food with a new ingredient?? My DS is fine when he eats applesauce but when he eats applesauce with cinnamon he gets a rash around his mouth that dissapears within a half hour. Perhaps see if different brands are being used?

I would provide them with a digital camera so that they can take pictures of the rash for you so you can show your ped. Good luck and keep us posted!!

Sounds like an allergic reaction.. in particular contact dermatitus. Check with a pediactric allergist that has a dermotolagist available for a consult. 14 months is youg to accurately identify any allergies present, but they might be able to point you in the direction of what is causing the transient irritation. Finding out if new cleaning agents, wipes, and soaps are being used is another good idea.

Get a list of the carpet, mats, and materials at the daycare. They should have one readily on hand if they keep inventory like they are supposed too.

i agree with mkgbrook. I have a dd2yr 9months that has eczema and well anything that touches her skin she gets a hive from. Looks like a big circle of a rash. I found out that I had to stop using dreft (what i thought was safe,,,,,not) and go to anything that was FREE. Like tide free or ALL free. I have been using the ALL free and wow what a huge difference. I only use that now for the entire family except dh's black clothes. and no one has broken out. I DO NOT use any dryer sheets or softners at all dont even have them in the house at all.

Get her tested by an allergist. I did the whole dermatologist thing and well they didnt help. The allergist tested my dd just a few months ago and although it was painful with the scratch testing we found out that she had no allergies like dog,cat,mold stuff like that but she did have the contact dermitits and she is very sensitive to things touching her skin.

AGain make sure you get a list of everything there. LIke her mat that she naps on as well and what they use as a detergent. List what you use as well and the softner as well. Do they have latex there? Do they have hard water and use a water softner? The salt in the water softener might bother her if she comes into contact with hte water.

Just some suggestions
