7.5 Month old still not talking? - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

our DD has still not said a word-Mama, Dada, Baba.....we just want her to say something soon! some other babies in our mommy group have said ONE of these....i know it's still early but how common is this that a 7 month old-almost 8 month old hasn't murmered a real word yet?

Very common. My 15 month old still doesn't say "dada", but he says a bunch of other things. (He calls his daddy "mama" too...poor guy) His first word wasn't until 9 months. My girls were chatterboxes and they didn't say their first word until 10 months. As long as your baby is making some noises and using inflection, that's fine. Seven months is very early to worry about not saying words. Even when they do babble "mama" and "dada" at this age, it's not intentional and not for any specific thing. It's just making noises to them.

My son's first word were "beah" (Bear is the dogs name) "bahl" (for ball or the current chew toy in the dog's mouth) and "god" for "dog".. that had us panicking. We couldn't go out with out him screaming "GOD" at every dog sighting. That was the longest month..

As long as your child is making oral noise at this point you are good. The child will be talking before you know it and telling you they know everything soon enough. My 4.5 year old like to let us know he knows more than us.

Hello! A really helpful resource for you would be "What to Expect the First Year". If you don't want to buy it, it ususally is in every library. I notice quite a few posts from you concerning your LO's development and I believe me know what it is like to be a nervous mommy but if you better educate yourself about infant development you will be able to relax more about it and enjoy each and every stage your baby is going through. Please don't take offense, because I really mean this in the nicest of ways- I hate to see you being stressed about things like this!

Your LO is too young to be saying true words, if a child this young is saying true words then that is rare. Most likely they babies in the play group are BABBLING mama, dada etc and do not connect the words to a person. If the parents say that they are then you are either surrounded by a bunch of genius babies, or the parents are just wishful thinking! (Which is ok too, lol!)

My LO was 10 mos when he said his first true word "Cook cook" meaning cookie. He was saying mama and dada by a year but he called everyone either mama or dada and it wasn't until he was about 15 mos that he consitently called people by name- and then it was a handful of people.
