Blocked tear duct - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

My 1 week old has a blocked tear duct and it has gotten infected (I think). We are going to the doctor on Monday anyway, but in the mean time - any ideas on home remedies?

I have tried a warm washcloth massage but so far - no change except it does make her eye puffier. I was think maybe something cold/cool might work better since it could reduce some of the swelling. But beyond that - I am out of ideas.

The only thing I've heard to do for that is the warm massage. You might try looking it up on the internet. I can't imagine that a cool massage would hurt anything, it might even feel good for your little one.

My son had a blocked tear duct for over 2 months. Everytime I fed him I massages the corner of his eye. One night almost 2 months later he slept all the way through the night, in the morning he had a huge eye crust on that eye, never had a problem since then.

A friend of mine's dd had a problem with blocked ducts and she needed a simple surgical procedure to fix it.

i think the warm massage is the best thing for it until you see the doctor. i remember my nephew had a blocked tear duct and his doctor gave him some ointment to put on it and told them to do warm massages and apply the ointment so many times a day, and it cleared up pretty quickly.

Both of my boys were born with blocked ducts ( one with only one eye and one with both eyes) they usually clear up on thier own. The warm massages were suggested to me by another mom, but our doctor said that they help minimally if at all. The little procedure that can be done to clear the problem is so short it can almost hardly be called a procedure. The yellow/green puss that come out of the eye is normal and the slight swelling is too. Don't worry.
