what are hives?

ive never seen hives before but i read about them frequently on this board, about ten mins ago dd started complaining about her feet itching really bad so i took a look and her feet are red and she has loads of white bumps some are quite big, does this sound like hives?
they have just come out of no where, she had some toast a short while ago but the butter is one she has had a few times before, ive given her a little antihistamine to help with the itching, she is due to go to nursery in an hour,, do i still send her or is this something i need to keep her at home for?
any advice would be great!

Re: what are hives?

Hives are large red splothes, usually hot to the touch and can be accompanied by breathing difficulties. They are a tell tale sign of an allergy. Anyway, that doesn't really sound like hives to me. Usually they appear first on the face, neck or arms.
