Mongolian Spot

Noticed that my son has a blue/black kind of bruise on his bottom. At first i thought it must be a bruise even though i did not recall how this could have happened now i noticed that it hasn t changed colour and has been there. .....he s 9 weeks now. i did some research and heard that these are common in coloured Asian or latin babies. My son has really fair skin. Just wondering if this is normal and if any of your babies have this. Will of course discuss it with my dr on our next visit.

Re: Mongolian Spot

My best friend's husband is filipino, so she had no idea what it was either. But both of her kids have it, and it turns out her husband did too as a kid!
It looks like a mix between a bruise and a birthmark...

Re: Mongolian Spot

YEs .. for most Asian-indian people this never goes away but just fades..
it hardly matters..
funny you mention it a bruise looking thingy.. someone told me that the child nearly got foster care and the parents were nearly behind bars coz authorities thought those were abuse marks.. but they were just mongolian spots.

Re: Mongolian Spot

I hope this story makes you laugh (at least a little)

We adopted our son from Korea in Feb - our first diaper change was alarming and near hysteria. B/C this is the first time we saw his bottom and it looked like a huge round bruise (black and blue) on his bottom. So first time parents over 8,000 miles away from home and in a hotel in Seoul Korea...not a good thing.

I took pictures and emailed them immediate to our US adoption agency and Dr just to CYA.

Within 36 hours of taking custody we had his first Dr's appointment (in the USA) and our Dr laughed really hard and gave me a hug. He explained this is a birth mark and that it will fade over time.

Our Dr made a noted in our son's medical records and advised us that if we ever have an ER trip to disclose it upfront otherwise an untrained eye could mistake it as a bruise and abuse.

At any rate yes it can be alarming - but have your dr check it out and I hope my story made you smile
