my son is one week shy of 9 months old and still topples over when we sit him up. should we be concerned?

I am not really sure of what the time line is supposed to be on sitting alone, but I'd say if you are concerned, just give a quick call to your pedi and they should be able to tell you right away! Good luck.

I'm not sure on the early end of it but the high end of the "normal," range for sitting is 9 months. If he can't sit alone at all yet (not sit himself up, but just sit when you sit him) then I would bring it up at his next check up. My son was 8 months before he sat alone, which was within normal, but definitely toward the high end of normal.

My son is 7 months and still really wobbly when it comes to sitting up. However he is crawling FWIW. He's also very long and lean which makes me wonder if its a little more difficult for him to sit than some of his chubby little baby friends who seem to have started sitting up almost as soon as they came out!!

We went for a late 6 month appointment and our ped told me to sit with him on the floor and help him sit by holding on to his waist and pressing on certain muscles in his lower back with my thumbs. Its hard to explain but apparently this will help him to strengthen and learn to better use the core muscles he needs to sit. Your pediatrician might encourage you to do some similar exercises.
