putting baby on stomach

i know they say now that your supposed to put the baby to sleep on there back but my 7 wk old has GERD and his dr told me to put him to sleep on his stomach cuz the chance of him spitting up and choking in his sleep is greater then a baby that doesnt have reflux. has anyone else had to do this?

Re: putting baby on stomach

As far as sleeping on the tummy goes, I say follow your gut instinct. I know a lot of people think that the back is the best position, and while that's probably true for many babies, it's not true for all babies, such as your own. I would definitely put the baby on his tummy to sleep if that's what his doctor recommended.
I opted to let my ds sleep on his tummy from the time he was a couple months old because it's the only way he would sleep for longer than a couple hours at a time. He was very strong with his neck also, so I didn't worry about him doing a face plant, and not being able to lift his head to turn it.
I think you should follow your dr's advice on this one.

If you can get one of those little bumber things that the baby la betweento hold him in place you can let him lay on his side. thats what i would do. to limit all the fuss and also to opt out choking. good luck!

Re: putting baby on stomach

I think if his pedi recommended it then it should be safe. I doubt he'd tell you to do that if he thought the baby couldn't handle it. If you aren't comfortable with doing it though, they also have sleep positioners that are inclined. I just got one of these for my little girl because she spits up a lot when laying down. Just a suggestion, but again, if he recommended it, I think he should be fine on his tummy!
