Hi There , we had our 13mth old in our bed for the first couple of months (i kept worrying about him choking in his sleep !) , then we moved him in to a moses basket beside our bed until around 6 months , then we moved him into his own room in the crib , during this whole time he would sleep in his crib for naptime . At the beginning , what i would do is around 8pm , I would bring him up on to the couch with me and lie him down on his blankie on the couch while we watched some tv (In the night garden !,great show!) he would usually dose off and then i would put him in his crib . That is kind of still the same , of course now he is running around , i pick him up at and sit him on my lap and tell him "ok its sleepytime " and he starts to wind down while we watch some tv , then when hes totally calm i take him in and lie him in the crib and just stand there , with his wee nightlight on , and shush him for around 5-10 mins until he drops off . Ive yet to get to the point where i can put him in and walk away , but as it stands just now , i really dont mind being there for that short time , maybe gently reading him a story or singing a song till he drops off . I find that just me being there makes him calm and i dont have to do the 'crying it out ' thing .
So , maybe that could help , if you help him wind down in the living room with you till he's sleepy ,then take him thru and be with him till he goes down . ? I had all the same problems with each stage too , but i find if you are consistant with something it usually sticks , and this has stuck for us . Hope this helps , and you can get some sleepy time yourself !!!
