Baby slings

Hi everyone,

I have been researching what kind of sling to buy with baby #2 recently, so I thought I'd ask you ladies what your experiences have been! With Liam, we just had a Snugli that we bought at Wal-Mart for like $15, and it's fine if you just use it to walk around the mall with, take a walk to the store, etc.. But with this baby, I am expected to entertain a toddler, take care of the house, AND deal with a newborn, so I want to get something sling-like, that the baby is better able to sleep, breastfeed, and just be in when we're at home.

I've looked a lot at the Ring Slings (I think the original Maya one is the one I'm most interested in)--and I like the unpadded (seems to be less bulky), but I'm not too sure how comfortable it would be.

Any opinions are appreciated!

Whiskers

P.S. Another question I have is, will the baby be safe in there all squashed looking (from pics and video I've seen), when they're very little?

Re: Baby slings

Hey whiskers-

I have a vast array of slings. I have several ring slings, a snuggli, a hotsling, and a moby wrap. I think the moby wrap is the best. Granted, it takes some time to figure out how to tie it. But once you do, you can literally hold the baby in any position. It comes with a book detailing how to do a TON of different holds. They even have holds for twins! It is awesome.

I didn't get it with DD until she was about 10 months old, but it is still by far my favorite. Even at 10 months when she was all squirmy, she stayed in perfectly safe. With other slings I felt like I needed to have a hand on her all the time, but not with the Moby, she just felt so snug.

I think it is nice to have a couple of options. The hotsling is super easy to use, and I will probably use it over the Moby when I am just running a quick errand, such as a quick stop at the grocery store. But I think the Moby is ideal for when you have to babywear for long periods of time. Also, it is way easier on your back than a lot of others. I wore DD to a wedding, and there was standing room only at the wedding and reception. Needless to say, DD was in the Moby (facing forwards) for about 2 hours, and she was happy, and my back was feeling fine.

Sorry for the novel, I just really like my Moby. It has become my go to gift for new Mom's. I only wish I had bought it sooner.

HTH!

Re: Baby slings

My favorite was the Hotsling. It can be used until 35 pounds. The Hotsling you buy according to your size and it is not adjustable, but it is fantastic. I still use this with my toddler sometimes. I used the Infantino sling, the one where the baby lyes down into it from birth to 4 months. I never cared much for the front carriers like the Baby Bijorn style. It is more natural for the baby to be in a Maya, Hotsling style carrier.

Re: Baby slings

I used a Baby Bjorn front pack with my first 2 girls, then with #3 I bought a New Native carrier. It was AWESOME!!!! As far as them being squished and safe in the slings, that's how they are when they are inside your womb. When they are real new you just need to make sure that there head doesn't get too close to the chest to cut off circulation. The New Native sling came with instructions on how to roll a blanket to put under the baby and also had videos on how to use the sling in different ways (depending on size and age of baby).
