Sore throat causing baby not to drink her milk, dr does nothing! - Infant Care (up to 18 months old) Message Board

Well I posted 2 days ago that my 9 month old has been drinking less milk , alot less, so I took her to the dr yesterday and she checked her and said she looked fine but she has some mucus in her throat and there is nothing she can do, and that the baby will probably swollow it, and to give it a few days.

There is nothing we can do? really? my baby does seem like she wants to keep on drinking but she's been stopping at 4oz (She usually takes 3 bottles of 8oz), for the past few days she's been taking 4 oz at everyfeeding. I tried to elevate her bed yesterday but I didnt notice a difference, she's eating her solids (stage 2 or 3 jars) but its the liquids that is the problem. The doctor said aslong as she has a wet diaper every 4 hours than she's fine.

I'm worried and concerned, what do I do?

The doctor is right. If she is eating her baby food, then just make sure that she does drink. Water is fine temporarily. Milk will be making the mucus worse, and a day or two off it will not hurt her as long as she drinks something.

I agree with the previous poster. Milk will actually make the mucus thicker and make the problem worse. It's actually in your daughter's benefit to take her off of it for a day or two or dilute it with more water.

Do you have a vaporizer that you can run in her bedroom at night time? We have the Vick's that helps a lot.

I know it's really tough seeing your little girl this way. I've been there and we're actually struggling through a cold right now (daughter and self). You just have to wait it out. Hang in there!

Many people dont introduce honey until 12 months due to the potential for allergies. Others are a little more relaxed at about sixmonths. Depending on your point of view you could add a little bit of warm honey to some water. The honey can help sooth her throat and also provide a little sugery energy until she is drinking good amounts of milk or eating again. You dont need much, just stir it around warm so it disovles a little (you might need a 'faster' flow teat if using a bottle (a bigger hole) Hope she feels better soon.

We've gone through many things with our 3 girls and this is a hard one for any mother. However, heed what the doc has told you. As long as the little one isn't getting dehydrated and is eating, then she should be ok. Have you tried some warm water in a bottle? She may be able to take that a bit easier, but to be honest, these things ride themselves out usually in a few days.
