awww....poor baby! I am sorry to hear your daughter is feeling sick.
First, the rash - it sounds a lot like eczema. Has she been tested for allergies? She could very well be allergic to something. Is she bottle fed? Babies can have an allergic reaction to formula or even something in your breast milk - like eggs, dairy, etc.

As far as the other symptoms, is it just the cough at this point???

Poor baby. Is she lactose intolerant? Regular docs will not think to test for that. You'll have to push.

Re: my 10 month old baby has been ill for 4 months

hi thankyou both for replying, she hasn't been tested for lactose intolerence yet, she is still on baby milk we put her back on it after a few weeks of trying cows milk because she wasn't gaining weight and still isn't, it seemed her reflux meds were working but it lasted the whole of 4 days and she is back to what she was like, do you think this could still be asthma even though she doesnt seem 2 wheeze, i dont no if she does at night as we dont really go in unless absolutely necessary as she is a very light sleeper.xx

Re: my 10 month old baby has been ill for 4 months

I am not so sure about asthma b/c that is something doc's can determine right away. If she had asthma, I am sure they would have been able to tell by now just by listening to her lungs. My son was diagnosed with asthma at 15 months. An asthma cough is constant and your baby would be gasping for air.

I would take her to a skin specialist for the face rash. It does sound like she is having some type of allergic reaction, which may even be effecting her lungs?

Re: my 10 month old baby has been ill for 4 months

we thought this in the beginning but we cant determine the cause she has been tested for coelliacs disease that came back neg we have been given an inhaler for her because apparantly it is very difficult to diagnose asthma in a baby, and we have tried antibiotics we just seem to have come up against a brick wall, we have another hospital app on the 30th of december so will se what comes of that, i do think that the rash on her face will be eczma as my son had it when he was a baby, but it cleared up very quick, she just seems to look so unhealthy bless her thankyou for your reply's i really appreciated them

IMO, you should push for Cystic Fibrosis Testing. The sweat test is not always accurate, but can give an initial indication if there are issues. Does your child taste salty when you kiss her. Also the nasty stools and failure to thrive are also an indication of possible CF. Did they do a fecal fat test to see if there are malaborption issues -- problems digesting fat. Also, did they do a culture -- people wcf get throat cultures to see what bugs may be growing. If they did a culture and it showed something like pseudomonas, it could also be an indication.

IMO push push push for more testing so at the very least they can rule out CF and move on to something else. You child has been sick far too long.

Re: my 10 month old baby has been ill for 4 months

hi thanks for replying, so far she has had blood tests for coeliacs disease which came back neg, she has had a urine test, and a pooh test so far all that has come back is she has a slightly low iron count, so they want to start her on iron next visit.she doesnt taste salty when i kiss her thats a good thing right? but the reflux meds definatly have not done anything, i definitly am going to push for more tests because after being ill for so long surly it cant just be me being paranoid. she has another app on the 30th of this month, i dont suppose you no what other thing they may possibly test for do you?

Re: my 10 month old baby has been ill for 4 months

Ask if they could do a sweat test as well as a fecal fat test -- provided she can produce a sample for them. Or ask them if they did a fecal fat test before. You could also ask them to do a throat culture to test for CF bugs -- pseudomonas, mrsa, staph.. To rule out CF.

Depending upon the type of reflux meds, maybe she needs a different one. DS was on zantac (nasty peppermint schnaps smelling syrup) for reflux and it didn't do a thing for him either.

A lot of clinics aren't willing to do genetic blood testing for CF right away due to costs. A lot of times they'll only test for the 30-100 of the most common mutations and there are over 1500 mutations.
