Has anyone heard of this medical condition? A friend of mine is worried about getting this condition (she currently has a very heavy cold), but I cannot find anything about Mercer Disease.

No, you get it from another infected person. Usually in hospitals but increasingly in other places like nursing homes, high schools and contact sports like wrestling and football.
