staph infections

My niece has blisters and sores in her mouth. Her lips are also spliting open from the inside of her mouth. She has went to 2 different doctors and they haven't told her much of anything. They did give her some infection meds. but it's not helping its just getting worse. She has been running a high fever for about a week. I have just found out that her little sister has a staph infection on her but. Could she have a staph infection in her mouth.

Re: staph infections

Staph generally doesn't cause infection in the mouth. There is a form of Staph infection called impetigo AROUND the mouth/lips and under the nose which can have little pimple like things and "honey coloured crust", but INSIDE the mouth with blisters is not typical. Children can get certain viral infections which result in pain in the mouth including Coxsackie and Adenoviruses. They should also swab for Herpes...no, I am not suggesting abuse here, but Herpes Simplex Type I is carried in the oral mucosa of many normal individuals, and all the child has to have is a parent who suffers from cold sores to pick up the virus.
