Candylady,
A necrotizing granuloma is a "good" thing as far as solitary pulmonary nodules go because it's almost certainly not cancer, and more likely it's secondary to an infection that can be treated. Sorry, where are you from again?
A granuloma is a specific finding that one sees under the microscope when looking at pathologic specimens. It is a type of inflammation which is typical of infection with certain organisms. These include: tuberculosis, non-tuberculous mycobacteria, dimorphic fungi (e.g. blastomyces, histoplasma, coccidiodes etc.) There are other things that can cause granulomatous inflammation as well, but are rare.
They will keep that piece they took from your lung and culture it for fungi and tuberculosis. What you have will depend on where you live.
ADD: Ahh, I see you're from California....either of those three fungi are possible. Have you ever lived in a foreign country for an extended period of time? Otherwise, I'm going to say it's going to be one of the dimorphic fungi.
Have you otherwise been feeling well or have you been having things like fevers, chills and night sweats?
HI, thanks.. just got back from seeing the DR. & told me its a Fungi & I have to get some pills for it. I didn't have this last yr. i got it this yr. & no i never been out, only to Vegas,. & Palm Spring.. what does,, GMS-positive for fungi mean ? & also PAS-positive for fungi.. i don't worry that much, now that i know its not Cancer.. you have a nice day,.
That's great news that it's not cancer!! Those GMS and PAS are just fancy words for stains which are good for picking up fungi on microscopic specimens. Did your doctor tell you the name of the fungus? Are you being placed on itraconazole?

Are fevers, chills and night sweats symptoms of cancer? My CT scan in May found a 4mm nodule in my lower lobe lung. The follow up CT scan on Monday showed that the nodule is stable and unchanged. The pulmonologist said that he would have wanted me to wait until next May for the scan, but since I was nervous, he ordered the scan last Mon
I was nervous because I had night sweat, coughing, chest pain and chills the last 4 weeks. The pulmonologist said that the nodule is too small to cause any symptom.
So, I'm hoping the symptoms I have are caused by quitting the Clonazapem drug I was taking for about 5 months.
Yes fevers, chills and sweats can be a symptom of cancer, BUT, just because you have them doesn't mean you have cancer. If your pulmonary nodule is otherwise stable for a long time, it probably isn't the culprit...I'm glad you're being followed by a lung specialist. Your fevers/chills right now may simply be symptoms of a passing viral infection.
the name my DR. gave me, its called,, Valley Fever, thats what i have.. He didn't give me no pills for it, told me to see him in 6 months.
Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS
