Insemination like on The L Word? - Infertility Message Board

Is anyone a fan of The L Word? I am a 23 year old woman who is madly in love with another woman. My partner has children of her own, but I really want to have kids of my own and to experience pregnancy. Does anyone know how the couple on The L Word ended up getting pregnant? They had the sperm and a really long syringe and did it at home. Is this for real, or is it another Hollywood thing? Also, if it is for real, does anyone know if this is a common practice? Any answers would be great!! Thanks So Much!!!

Hi,
I havn't seen the L word, Artifical self insemination is the same for anyone, In a same sex relationship or otherwise.

First work out your ovulation dates. Just before ovulation is due you inseminate yourself.
Insemination is really easy, You need a pot for the sperm and a 5ml or 10ml syringe (Without a needle!!) to use yourself, You can buy these from the chemist or try surragocy sites. The donor uses the pot to collect the sperm, It need's to be kept at body temerature and used as soon as possible for best results. Use the syringe to draw up the sperm and place the syringe in side you and sqirt gentley, If you place your hips on a pillow your sending the swimmers in the right dirrection. Stay lying down for at least 30 mins. Thats it! Fingers crossed!!

Thanks for the info!!! Do you know if this is more or less effective than having it done in a clinic?

I have not done extensive research. I just saw the episode and was curious. I do not have a ton of money to spend and thought that doing it myself might be cheaper. But, this method works?

Also, since I guess I am naive and do not know, do I need to go the doctor to find out when I ovulate? Or is there some easy way to tell that I do not know about? I have PCOS, so my periods are very irregular, so I don't think that I will know by that alone.

Hi,
I'm not sure about wether the odd's on this way are better or worse this way or through a doctor, This way would cost you considrably less than going to a clinic. Also you have the abbillity to choose someone who you want to recive the genetics from.

Ovulation - I'm not sure with regards to the PCOS, I'm sure if you put another question out somone will be able to tell you more, You could try using ovulation kit's which you can buy at a cemist.
