What to expect? (IVF) - Infertility Message Board

Hi there, have posted before on this thread about Clomid but now my Doc is deffinately taking it further and sending me to an Infertility Specialist as appose to my Gyn.

The question is, if they say im to go ahead and do IVF, which my doc says he is 99.9% sure they will, what costs am i looking at and how many tries can you recieve on the NHS?

We have just set up a business and im a poorly paid Vetinary nurse so money isnt flowing in as we would have hoped, its just if i get a figure in my head i can start thinking of ideas to raise the funds.

Is NHS the Canadian or British health system??

I have insurance, but live in a state where IVF is not a required coverage. And the insurance I have is run by nuns who don't beleive in any fertility treatments, especially not IVF. So....I had to pay out of pocket for the whole thing.

(keep in mind these are my costs. I'm in the USA in the West)
Procedure: $8900+ (my procedure included ICSI)
Medications: $5000 +

I also had to get a sperm donor which cost me $380. And follow up ultrasounds cost me about $114 each (I'll have 2 during my 6th and 8th week prior to being released to a regular obgyn).

What I can tell you is that IVF works. It's more scientific and exacting than IUI, but due to this, it's far more costly. It was my only choice due to my age (41).

The NHS in England so the british health system.

My gosh i cant believe how expensive that is, im not even sure that this is the route they will send me down, i just wanted to get an idea of cost,

If I'm not correct, I've seen other people from the UK post about IVF. I beleive (and I could be wrong) that you get put on a waiting list for IVF. But it sounded as though the costs were considerably lower. I just think the wait is the biggest obstacle once you've decided on it.

I qualified for just 1 cycle of IVF on the NHS at an elected service provider as me and my partner met the criteria set by our Essex health authority to obtain it,such as both having no other children with previous partners and I was under 40 at time of referral to the IVF clinic at a London hospital.Since April couples are now allowed to ask for 1 free cycle of IVF on the NHS due to the unfair postcode lottery that existed before,but only when certain criteria are met.The whole process from being referred by my GP to infertility specialist and then to the IVF clinic and getting the IVF took 2years 8 months,with 6 failed iui tries in the meantime.Each IVF cycle wouild cost approx £3000 if self funded at my IVF clinic inLondon which rates as the 3rd best in UK with a 33% success rate.I am now a week away from finding if the IVF worked.Hope this helps,and good luck.
