Reasons for Positive HPT

Ok, so I'm freaking out right now. I'm sure most of you don't remember my particular scenario, so I will give you a quick rundown:

I've never had regular periods, in fact my last period was 10 mos ago. I've had a HSG- clear tubes, taken two rounds of Provera, one with Premarin to build my uteran lining and start my period- they didn't work. I had bloodwork done on 1/29/07 and my horomone levels are all out of whack- high prolactin, high testosterone, low LH, etc... I recently visited an endo doc and he has ordered a MRI and more bloodwork to see if it's my pituitary gland that causing my reproductive system not to work, or possibly PCOS, or both.

Well this morning I woke up and I thought to myself "I need to take a HPT". The reason I felt I needed to was b/c for the last couple months I've been complaining about my stomach being bloated (more so than usual) but I've always chalked this up to the Premarin and Provera that I took in Nov/Dec/Jan. I just figured that it had bloated my stomach and it was going to be that way until I finally had a period. The last couple weeks I have been feeling my stomach and it started feeling hard. I figured I better be sure b/f my MRI tomorrow.

So, I took a test. It was positive. "Ok, no reason to get excited- you need to go get more tests." I told myself. I got 3 more tests- different kinds, and I just took another one. It was positive. "Still, this is no reason to get excited. There are several reasons why it could be positive." I told myself. So, I called my doc's phone nurse and just left her a message to order me a blood test from the lab to test me again- I figure, why not- I have to go get bloodwork drawn anyways for the endo doc, right? I'm also going to take another HPT later this evening.

I mean, there's no way that I can be pregnant with no periods, right? If I'm not having cycles, I can't conceive. That's what I've been telling myself, and my DH for 6 mos now. Oh, I haven't shared this news with him yet- I want to be sure b/f I tell him.

What are the reasons for a false HPT? I'm not on any medication, except that I took a tylenol cold head congestion pill before I went to bed last night at midnight. It's not a defective test, b/c I have done two of them. I'm scared and excited and I just can't believe this. I mean I haven't exactly been acting like a pregnant woman the last few months- I have had drinks. Many drinks. I have crash dieted. I have exercised too much, and not enough. I've been overly active, and underly active! I haven't been taking any prenatal vitamins!!! Or getting enough folic acid!!! I'm freaking out now!!!

Re: Reasons for Positive HPT

Hi,
All I can say is waoohhh. The only reason I know that can give you a false positive is clomid/trigger and progesterone which you are not taking. I know there can be a false negative but not the other way round. This could be your little miracle baby, hopefully your bloodwork should sort it out but before then, congratulations in advance cos i know you are prego baby.

OMG!!!! I definitely think that a CONGRATULATIONS is in store This is so exciting!!!! Actually the only thing that will give you a false positive is a hcg trigger shot. Clomid and progesterone will not give you a positive on a pregnancy test. So since you have not had a trigger shot, I definitely think this a real positive! I can't wait to hear how your blood test goes. I would definitely wait before having your MRI tomorrow. Please keep us posted!

I do not mean that the clomid and progesterone will give you a false positive rather when you use trigger with your clomid and the rest but if not, you are fine.

Re: Reasons for Positive HPT

Ok, so my doc's phone nurse finally called me back at 4:30pm and put in an order for a blood test at a lab 5mins away so I ran over there right before they closed (thank goodness I live in an urban area). I had blood drawn for a pregnancy test, but skipped the other horomone tests b/c logically if I am pregnant then all my horomones will be off kilter anyways!

I asked the nurse why I would have two positive tests and she said 'Well, probably b/c you're pregnant.' I thought 'no duh, phone nurse.' Then she said given my history it might be unlikely, but have the blood work done and call her in the morning for the results. Oh, the wait!

I have two more HPT's, I'm going to take one later tonight, and save the other for later. This is just so crazy. I'm still holding off on telling DH. If the blood work comes back positive, then I will tell him.

I thought about going to target to get some prenatal vitamins but I don't want to jinx myself!
