It sounds like you are rarely ovulating, possibly due to PCOS or other hormonal imbalance. What happens when you don't ovulate is your body just keeps making estrogen, but no progesterone to signal a period. This causes the uterine lining to grow and grow and grow and never shed, resulting in a MAMMOTH bleed every once in a while. This is known as DUB or dysfunctional uterine bleeding. You need to see an endocrinologist and get checked for PCOS. You can also be put on progesterone pills to make you have a period every month or two, which will keep the uterine lining from building up so much.
