No Vas - CF carrier - Infertility Message Board

i am a cf carrier and missing my vas. i will undergo MESA to extract sperm and then we'll go through the IVF cycle. are there any other men out there who can relate to this.

has anyone undergone MESA already? i'm curious about pain as well as the success rate.

Did you go to the Dr. and find out that you do not have a vas? How did they find this out? What is a CF carrier? Sorry for so many questions. My husband has a zero sperm count and we have not had any further testing done to find out why and just wondered if you could shed some light on the subject as to how they go about finding out about the vas and what they do to take care of it. Hope that what you are having done works for you. Thanks Kristin

My semen analysis came back zero and I did some research. I already new that I am a carrier of Cystic Fibrosis. I learned that carriers of CF can be born missing their vas deferens, which transports the sperm from the testes out through the penis. I went to a urologist who is a male infertility specialist and he checked me out, discovering I was indeed missing my vas deferens.

MESA is the surgical procedure I will undergo, in which the sperm will be surgically removed from my epididimis. Once my sperm is removed, IVF or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) will be performed. Hope this info helps your husband if he's in the same boat as me.

My husband has your same problem. We had our first ivf done in january and it was a successfull one. He said it did hurt since the anesthesia is only local. he said it felt like someone was pulling his insides through there or like a big fat guy was stepping on his .... while he was laying down. But he said if we have to do it again he would. He's scar is completely gone and he was able to run after a week. So compared to all that we woman have to go through (before, during and after) ivf, Mesa and/or Tesa is a piece of cake. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I'm not looking forward to the MESA, but I agree that it pales in comparison to our female partners. The good news is that it is a one-time deal since the sperm can be frozen.

Congrats on your successful IVF. Hope ours goes as well.
