Insurance doesn't cover IUI (imagine that) and my RE thinks it will be the next step. How much do they run - out of pocket (ie: should I start looking into sitting outside of the subway station with a tin can, harmonica, and a "Infertile Vet-Will Play for Cash" cardboard sign)???

I am from BC Canada so I am not sure if this answer will help you but I just paid for my three units of donor sperm, nursing costs, handling fee, shipping, and tax and it was a total of $1151.00 Cdn plus I will have to pay an additional $100 for each additional insemination. So my total for three IUI's if I need them all will be $1351.00 Cdn. Plus I am taking Clomid so I also have to pay for that and then there are the Ovulation predictor kits.

Not sure if this will work in the US or not but I was told to keep all my receipts and claim them on my tax return here in Canada as medical expenses. They said at least this way I would get a portion of the expenses back.

That does help - thanks! I have a baby folder with all of my reciepts too - I am banging them even for EPTs - will probably get audited - but I am doing it anyway!

IUI is not that expensive I think I paid around $250 somewhere in there. I know it definately isn't over $500. You are using DH sperm right?

Good luck and hang on to those receipts

Uncle Sam will hopefully accept them.

My insurance doesn't pay for IUI, but for some reason it pays for the rest (U/S, bloodwork, even sperm wash) except meds.
However, it took over a year and several appeals to come to this agreement with them. Before they started paying, I paid $50 for clomid, $20-$40 for HCG injection, $120 - $360 an u/s. (My old doc was $360 and my new doc is $120.) The actual IUI is about $120 at my new doc and $205 at old doc. Sperm Wash is $240.
At my first doc, I had to take progesterone tests. At one place they were $95 and at another they were $140.
There prices are mid-west US. prices.

It always pays to shop around, and it's a shame. For docs, we shouldn't have to.
