Good morning. I am fairly new here. I've posted before a long time ago. But I'm back again. I need help with a question.

My health insurance will not pay for infertility. They pay for testing but not treatment. I just finished up with the testing about a month ago. I'm starting treatment.

I have PCOS. The doctor is starting treatment with glucaphage(spelling?). Right now I'm on day 16 of my cycle. Last Thursday I went in for an ultrasound. If I was close to ovulation they were going to give me an injection of Novarel but I wasn't close enough. I went back in today and I still wasn't close enough. Everytime I go in the ultrasound and bloodwork it costs me $110. Plus the prescriptions cost me about $60.

If there wasn't enough pressure already. I have the financial pressure too. My DH and I can't afford to keep doing this month after month.

My question is, does anyone else have this problem and what do you do about it. Is there any help financially out there for me?

You can talk to your regular doc to see if he/she will give you the prescription for the glucaphage. You see that really isnt an infertility drug...it is normally used for those with Diabetes. If you can get your regular doctor to write the script for that might help some.
You can also ask about making payments instead of paying the full amount each time. Some will have payment plans.

This is in response to HRudey19's question about the cost of treatment medications. I live in southern California. I was taking Pergonal. My insurance didn't pay. In the U.S.the vials were $55.00-$66.00 each. I bought them in Tijuana, Mexico for $22.00 each. If you live near a border and can get to Mexico, youmight want to do that. They sell most of these meds over the counter. Just take your prescription and show it to the customs officials before coming back to the states. It was easy, hassle free and we saved approx $1,000.

One thing about crossing the border, just a word of caution......

Make sure if you're bringing meds across the border, you only bring what's considered "personal use." Normally that's about 3 months' worth of drugs AT THE MOST. Customs law has a very gray area with respect to "personal use" and you don't want to be walking that line and be branded as a drug smuggler, your life will be he!! after that.

Just a little friendly advice from someone "in the know"....
