I have PCOS and they use ultrasound to see if you have polycystic appearing ovaries, they can draw testosterone levels, fasting insulin levels, and glucose levels. You are right to want to get o the bottom of the problem. A lot of folks put the cart before the horse that way. For me the clomid didn't work for a year until I lowered my total fasting insulin level by taking glucophage and losing at least 10% of my body weight. You will find that you know and learn more about your problem than your docs. I am constantly researching and trying to find new options. I took me quite a few docs before I even got a diagnosis. I was 22 also when I got the dx (diagnosis) for the longest time my ob's office said no period was normal on the pill but I knew there was more to it and I was right!!! Bottom line you are the only one who is being effected by your problem so don't be intimidated by docs after all they are only practicing medicine and they look up what they don't know you have as many resources at your disposal as they do. I had a physician tell me that medicine is a consumer business and if you don't like what your doc is selling find another. Make sure you keep your own record of labs, records, etc. You put the peices together. As for having a period you do really need to have one before you start taking drugs... since the first day of your period is cycle day one... but i would try my hardest to get to the bottom of the problem good luck you are in for an emotional time! Just be persistent and stick up for yourself. They are working for you not the other way around.
