Day 3 transfer w ICSI

Has anyone had a BFP with a day 3 transfer and ICSI? I am currently in a second round of IVF and due to sperm morphology, we had to use ICSI for the fertilization both rounds. During the first round, we had a day 3 transfer. With this second round, we (incuding my RE) were hoping for a day 5 transfer so we could study the embryos more before the transfer. Then, I just got a call saying that they are targeting for a day 3 transfer. I read in the web that day 3 transfer's success rate is very low, especially if you had ICSI. In fact, if the embies that they transferred in day 3 were left alone in the lab to day 5, they probably would not survive. I just feel so hopeless and I feel like that the RE just want to get the embies into me before they all die on day 5 in the lab. I need some hopeful stories.

Thumbs up Re: Day 3 transfer w ICSI

YES!! I have had success with ICSI on day 3!!
In the past 3 years, I've done 3 fresh IVF and 3 frozen cycles and all 6 times were with ICSI. My very first transfer was on day 3 and it was a BFN. My next one was frozen (with day 6 blasts) and that too was a BFN. My next was a day 5 fresh transfer that gave me a BFP and my daughter! These cycles were with a clinic where the REs were more in favor of day 5 transfers just like yours. They also ONLY froze on day 5. Although it is true that many do not survive the 5 days in the lab, (I had 3 out of 7 that made it and only 2 were "blasts" and 1 was a pre-blast that never made it to freeze), there is still hope for them.
Then, 2 years later we went to a new clinic where they were much more in favor of day 3 transfers and also froze on day 3. I did one fresh cycle with day 3 embryos and got a BFP but then lost it right away. But I was able to freeze 9 on day 3. Then I did a frozen cycle, got a BFN and then another and got a BFP! I am now pregnant with twins from day 3 frozen embryos and due any day.
My RE told me once that it doesn't matter whether it is a day 3 transfer or day 5 transfer, frozen embryos or fresh, if they are meant to become your little miracles, then it will happen. Since I have had success with day 3 and day 5, frozen and fresh, I whole-heartedly agree!!
I think you should be optimistic and excited! IVF is hard enough to go through then to obsess heavily on the negative statistics and doubts. There is always hope and really, anything can happen. Your stats can be very different from others due to your unique infertility situation and your body (which also includes the stats of your age, your health, etc.) Stay positive and good luck!!

Re: Day 3 transfer w ICSI

Amy,
Obviously I can't give you a hopeful story yet on this, but STAY POSITIVE like KM7503 says. It's possible like she says. If it weren't possible, then why would they do day 3 transfers at all. It must work for some.
Keep us in the loop.
- Rae

Re: Day 3 transfer w ICSI

Thanks KM7503 and Rae for the supporting thoughts. It really helps to hear a successful story My RE called at 7:30 this morning to canceled the day 3 transfer because there are more than 3 good looking embies. She would like to wait until day 5 to better detremine which one to transfer. It was a relief to hear that I have more than 3 good looking embies, the first time around I only had 3 good looking ones by day 3. So, I worried and scared myself to death because of the stats and "day 3 vs day 5" articles. It is so hard for me not to go straight to the web and google for something that I am wondering about. I'll have to try hard next time to not freak out so easily. Thanks again guys for all the kind words. You guys are really blessings. Please keep your fingers crossed, paryers, or whatever for me for my day 5 transfer.

Re: Day 3 transfer w ICSI

Amy that is great news! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your day 5 transfer goes well and in 10 or so days we hear about a BFP! Best wishes!

Lots of baby dust heading your way
