Figuring 1st Cycle Day

Help! I'm 37 and ttc for the 1st time. My cycle is every 28 days but I have 3 very very light days with scant bright red blood and some dark blood then just two heavy days. Which do I count as my 1st cycle day? I used the 1st light day last month and didn't have an LH surge till the 18th cycle day. No luck. Any help is appreciated!

My doctor has told me to count the first "flow" day as the first cycle day. Hope this helps.

I too have spotting before my period. Have you ever charted your body temperatures? If you say huh? then go buy the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. It tells you how to chart your temps which can help you tell the best time of your cycle to get pregnant (or avoid it if so desired). It's a very informative and fast reading book.
