Re: Anyone had an ENT/balance test done?

Hi Regime, do you mean the ENG test? Just remember it is designed to make you dizzy, to see how you react and how the nystagmus(the jumping of your eyes) do while dizzy. It measures the differences, if any, between both ears.Thats the hard part. It also shows how your eyes track. What have your symptoms been? Good Luck. Belle

Hi, sounds like your getting all the right tests. I know, its scary going through them. Hopefully, they'll shed some light on what the problem is and you can start getting some relief. Belle

Re: Anyone had an ENT/balance test done?

Hi, I had the ENG done last month. It was not that bad -- brought on the vertigo, but because I was expecting it to, it really was just fine. If only all of the spinning spells were so predictable!! In my case, the tests can back normal, also had an MRI - normal, so the exasperating thing is still trying to figure out what it IS --rather than is not. Doc thinks perilymph fistula, a tear in the membrane between the middle and inner ear.

Sometimes I believe there are no answers..........With my health plan we have a high deductible.......this past year we spent so much money trying to figure out what it was I had. I had several diagnosis.........viral lab......menieres........another doc said no to menieres and viral lab.
Guess no one knows sometimes. I have accepted the fact that I may have on and off problems for the rest of my life. I don't like it.....but it is a fact I believe. But, when I look around and see what some others have I guess I can learn to live with this. Sometimes we get things they have no cure for yet........they do the best they can.......and we must learn to cope. Welll.......that is what I told myself.

Re: Anyone had an ENT/balance test done?

Lib and Regime, In answer to your questions, I've been having recurring spells of vertigo (spinning) for almost 2 years. The attack itself is quite acute -- everything is moving and lasts for 3 to 5 minutes. I also feel nauseated. In between attacks, I may feel fine or I may feel "off balance". Some days I get "mini" attacks where the spinning starts but stops abruptly several times. Additionally, I have some fullness and a "tinkling" tinnitus in my ear, some very slight pain/pressure, and yes, sometimes a feeling of warmth or wetness that is difficult to describe -- I'm not sure if you can actually feel a fluid leak --it's so slight. No real motion sickness, although I sometimes do not do as well after flying or road trips, but during them am fine. There is no good diagnostic test for fistula; primarily, they do tests to rule out other things. My hearing is great (had test); ENG is normal; rotary chair normal; MRI normal.

Re: Anyone had an ENT/balance test done?

Regime - Would be lying if I said the balance tests were pleasant...The ENG is nasty and it set me back for about 2 weeks afterwards. Mine was apparently normal though have been diagnosed with inner ear damage - one thing to remember is that ENG's are not too reliable - they only really come back positive if one sid of the balance system has a major problem - thats what my specialist told me. The ENG certainly cannot test for all inner ear problems esp if done at a late stage. So dont be disheartned if it is negative. A good specialist will know, just by your symptoms, if your problem is inner ear or something else. xxx

Re: Anyone had an ENT/balance test done?

Your best bet would be to type ENG into a internet search engine - but the first part consist of following a red light round the room which is fine. The Calorics - where cold then warm, water is syringed into your ears to produce vertigo, is the less pleasant! xxx

Re: Anyone had an ENT/balance test done?

Hi Regime,

I won't lie to you....I had the ENG done 3 weeks ago and for me it was horrendous. The caloric test sent me into orbit and it took a good 7-10 days before I got back to where I was before I had the test done in the first place. All they told me was that I was normal anyway. So unless you really feel it's necessary for your piece of mind I'd probably give it a miss personally.

Cheers....Scott

Re: Anyone had an ENT/balance test done?

I had an ENG done and it was uncomfortable but I needed to know what was wrong with me. I was starting to think I has MS or something brain related. How worth it to you is it to get a diagnosis?
