Inner Ear Infection/Hydroxyzine?

I recently was prescribed Hydroxyzine by my ENT for my dizziness and nausea due to ear infection. Has anyone else been prescribed this medication and has it worked? I've been on it for four days now and have seen some improvement.

I've had problems since August. It started with a sudden onset of nausea and dizziness while I was sitting in a restaurant. I felt like I was going to vomit or pass out. I've had the same symptoms off and on now since August. I've also had some ear pain. Antibiotics have been no help.

hi,
have not heard of this what kind of medication is it? i have had the same since sept, of and on, what kind of ear infection do they think you have, is it inner ear? do you feel fluid in your ears or do the pop and crackle? how long did your ent say this could last? i am going to a specialist on monday, wonder if it is the same thing. my ent told me this does not usually last longer than 6 weeks and thats why i am going else where, you can read many people have this longer. i am glad i found all the people here they keep me sane! lib

I was diagnosed with an inner ear infection. I also have some noise in my ears, but not much. Sometimes it feels like I have fluid in my ears. My biggest problem is the dizziness and nausea. Another problem that I found odd was the fact that I felt dizzy and nausea while listening to music. It felt like the bass really bothered my ears. The dizziness and nausea come in waves.

The ENT told me that the hydroxyzine is supposed to rest the inner ear. I don't know if it will work or not. I'm looking for anything at this point. It's been almost five months now of suffering with this.

They haven't done any tests as of yet. They want to do a CT Scan of my ears next month. Don't know what that will show. Caffine really makes me sick. I used to get a cup of coffee every morning on the way to work, but I had to stop that as it really made me sick. I guess I could go with decaf.

Really haven't noticed any probs with anything salty. I also haven't had any problems while watching TV. Music seems to bother my ears though.

Cool Re: Inner Ear Infection/Hydroxyzine?

..."Has anyone else been prescribed".....

..."and has it worked?"........

Short list of the drugs that are may be used to prevent and treat vomiting:

dimenhydrinate (Dramamine)
several clizines (e.g., cyclizine)
diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
promethazine
hydroxyzine (Vistaril)

Hydroxyzine is normally used to treat the nausea and vomiting which are some of the symptoms of your underling inner ear problem.

Yes---it was prescribed for me---in the beginning(Jul 02) of the VN W/BPPV---but did not take it---since it was prescribed to be used only if necessary---never felt---it was necessary---since the vertigo stopped---after day or two---and just the dizziness/unbalanced/rocking feeling remained---that all left---over time---and was completely gone---by the 13/14 month....... Never had any real sensitivity to sound/fluid in ear(s), etc... through out it all.

No hot flashes or fever that I can recall. I only have the dizziness, nausea, intermittent ear pain in my right ear, and sensitivity to some sounds. I also have that "full" feeling in my head. Like others have said on this site.."a fog".

Mine started out in August with the one real bad episode that scared the hell out of me. It's been hit and miss since. I feel good for a week, then feel like crap for a week.

I've also been a life long sufferer of sinus problems and recently found out that I have a deviated septum. I broke my nose playing baseball when I was a teenager. I'm sure the sinus problems don't help the ear condition.

Re: Hydroxyzine?

Re: Hydroxyzine, it is an allergy rx for Hives as the
generic `Atarax 25mg+'. I think Zyrtc 10mg. is the time
release form. Atarax sedates a portion of he brain that
releases a histamine causing itch, etc. I get help &
sleep w/ use. Got zip/0 from Zyrtec. Have chronic ear-
fluid & neither helped at all for that. I have no infection,
just feels like squishy fluid edema. Tubes didn't help.
My hives are from non-related. I think ENT's choose the
field to get rich. 1 patient can feed a family for 10 yrs.
Try a pill till we say it helps. Placebo effect. Histamines
dry tissue & can make sinuses work harder. Although if
too much allergies, get infection. We're a no win walking
pot-o-gold. 10 yrs. w/ a sinus tumor blocking up the
plumbing couldn't be found? 4 major surgeries for cancer
& they still don't know abt the ear fluid! Let us hope for
a gifted Dr. to appear on TV w/ an answer.
