Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

Hi,

I've been dealing with Lab/VN ince Oct 03 and have definitely improved (I vomited for most of December, thank goodness that seems to have stopped). What I seem to have been left with is this fuzzy, hazy feeling - I cant even describe it as dizziness, just sort of "off". Also quite heavy headed with occasional blocked ear feeling and very mild tinnitus. Does anyone else feel like this? Is this what happens when this thing is getting better? For example if I look quickly from left to right a few times and then centre again I get a bit of a wave-like feeling that lasts maybe 1-2 seconds and then subsides. Sorry if this sounds a bit dis-jointed. Any input would be appreciated. I must add that I have never experienced any sort of spinning episode.

Cheers

Re: Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

I kinda feel like that... again I cannot describe it... What I say is a sort of gross feeling... But Not exactly the wavy thing... I just have this sorta slight heavy strange feeling in my head that gets worse when I move my head. The first time I had labs three years ago, I would definately characterize it as
occurring only when I moved my head.. and yes it would feel like my yeses need 1-2 seconds to catch my head movement.. but I also characterized it as a gross odd feeling.

Re: Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

I completely understand the fuzzyhead. I feel like the back of my head is almost tingling, but it's more subtle. And the term I think you might be searching for is "disconnectedness". I can't say if it means you are getting better, but all the things you mentioned I have as well, but I have constant tinnitus, and only mild pressure in my ear, plus a few added symptoms (occasional vertigo, nausea, motionsickness, odd visual movements) and I have been dealing with this since June 03. After 8 plus months I am finally trying Klonopin. I resisted, but now my doctor has convinced me to give it a whirl. This darn thing is stubborn, but he claims that in most cases the ears act up for a while and then settle down again, and in theory, we will be normal. Meanwhile, I am still waiting.

Good luck to you, enjoy your improvements, they must be a sign of something better around the corner.

Hi Lizzy. Like Julianne, I too am still waiting! Yes I do know what you mean by the fuzzy head. I, though have inbalance 24/7 and the dizziness gets worse with head movements - mine does not always subside as quickly as yours but you are further on the road to recovery. Yes I get blocked ears and mild tinnitus. I am due to have grommets fitted v soon. xxx

Re: Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

Hi Emsybobs,

Can I just ask, do you ever find yourself worrying about Menieres Disease. I seem to have got it in my head that I have this which I know is illogical because I have no hearing loss or spinning vertigo. It seems us humans like to torture ourselves unnecessarily (me anyway) - I find myself looking at sites about Menieres and thinking "Yes, I have that symptom" and then worrying myself silly over it. I'm driving my family mad I think. Any advice? Anyone?

Thanks

Re: Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

Lizzy,
You are echoing my sentiments exactly. I am going through the same thing. I was diagnosed with Meniere's initally but a specialist disagreed and said it was way too soon to say that. He explained to me that Meniere's is diagnosed after a pattern of symptoms persist over a period of time and they can't find another cause. There are also the 4 big symptoms. Tinnitus, dizziness and or vertigo, hearing loss (sometimes only measurable during an attack in the beginning), and ear pressure or fullness. I've had all of those symptoms on some level, but they haven't measured any hearing loss when I was tested back in Sept. I think they should retest, but my doc doesn't seem too concerned at the moment. Anyway, my doctor says my ears are "acting up" and that I have some sort of vestibular dysfunction, but he's not willing to call it Meniere's at this point. He says it's not quite acting typical of that. Meneire's patients usually have vertigo attacks and times of relative normalcy. I have symptoms all the time. In any case, the treatment is essentially the same. Low salt diet and possible diuretics (I tried diuretics and went off because I felt horrible). So at this point it's all a waiting game, and I think you have to join with me in waiting it out. Some docs will diagnose Meniere's prematurely, as was my situation. So even if you get that diagnosis at this stage, I would get a second opinion. They also can do a test when they are really suspecting it. It's called the ECoG. I had that done and mine was slightly abnormal, and that's what led my ENT to call it Meniere's. However, the test is falible and not as difinitive as some docs would like to believe. You can look up about that on the web. Anyway, ease you mind as best you can and know that if it is Meniere's you'll know eventually, and if it isn't , this dizzy garbage will probably go away at some point. I know that's not super reassuring, but this whole vestibular thing is a waiting game, that's becoming completely clear to me now.

Take care,
Julianne

Hi Lizzy

Not sure if this will be of any help to you, but my ENT thinks I have a milder form of Menieres. It's called Endolymphatic Hydrops. He says you can have it with no hearing loss or vertigo. (I don't have either) I also get the disconnected heavy headed feeling, so bad at times I actually have to hold my head up...or at least I feel that I need to. Keep in mind though, the damage I have is permanent, so I will never get better.

Re: Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

Hi Lizzy. No I never think I have menieres, I know I dont as my symptoms are v different and I trust my specialist's diagnosis. Yours does not sound like it either - and anyway arent you getting better? My dizziness is constant not attacks. My ears are not "full" but I can feel fluid in the MIDDLE ear (ETD). Dont worry, this will go. Try not to worry about Menieres. xxx

Re: Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

hi lizzy,
i can sympathise with your worry about menieres, but u r answering your questions when u say that u dont have spinning vertigo, hearing loss, these would be a definite part of your symptoms, for years i have had bpv.....then i started with tinnitus...so i was seen by an ent who did hearing tests which initially were down by a per cent icant remember in my right ear, then further tests showed i had above hearing.....
i was seen about twice a year for 5 years to see if anything materialised like menieres but nothing did.........i had 2 deff symps for menieres, vertigo and tinnitus, but not the hearing loss.... i think also that the fuzzy feeling u describe does come along with the inner ear disorder.....i get that quite a bit too........not nice ........but it will all settle down......i had the blocked ear thing when started with tinnitus but that did go......i was dx with labs/vn last early may.......now dx an all round peripheral vestibular dysfunction.........
take care

brina

Re: Fuzzy Feeling - Anyone else?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have just come back from seeing my doctor who was absolutely brilliant, she took the time to listen to me. She basically re-iterated everything most of you have said ie; it will go, it is not unusual that it goes on a while and most importantly is IS NOT Menieres Disease, she said not even close. I mentioned the full ears and ear crackling and mild tinnitus which she said were all very common with most people not just those with inner ear probs. My dizziness is getting better (slowly) so she said I must focus on that and try not to get too bogged down. She thought my anxiety (worrying unnecessarily)was making my dizziness worse and suggested Kalms, so I will give them a go but all in all I feel so much better for just talking to her. Oh and she forbids me to look anything else up on any medical website!!!

Thanks everyone
