Fluid in Ear and Chest Pain

I have had pain in my left ear off and on (I would say about once every couple of months) ever since I was like 18 (I'm 27 now). With the ear pain also comes pain in the chest. If I lie on my left side, it's 10 times worse. I have been to the dr. in the past and it seems the ear pain is from fluid in my left ear. I have taken zyrtec for it and that usually clears it up, and then the chest pain goes away. I went to the cardiologist a couple of years ago about the heart pain and they did an EKG and an echocardiogram and everything came back normal other than a slight murmer. I'm just confused as to why the fluid in my ear would make my heart hurt. The doctors thought it was weird too and kept asking me if it was just heartburn..and no it's not heartburn <eyeroll>

Does anyone else have this problem or know of any links where I can read what causes this? Thanks!

Re: Fluid in Ear and Chest Pain

hi,
acid reflux, look in to that and get it taken care of, it can ruin your ears.
there is a condition called lpr, you may not even know you have it. its a type of reflux.lib

The pain I have is not heartburn and doesn't resemble heartburn at all. I read some links on acid reflux and none of the symptoms of it are remotely close to what I have experienced. I'm curious as to why you say it's that?

ETA I found a page on LPR and it says common symptoms are

Symptoms of LPR, especially in children, can be very nonspecific and in many times puzzling. Symptoms include:

Hoarseness
Chronic throat-clearing, excessive mucous
Chronic cough
Stridor (noisy breathing)
Difficulty swallowing
“Lump in the throat “(globus)
Reactive airway disease (wheezing)
Chronic bronchitis
Chronic airway obstruction
Wheezing
Apnea
Aspiration pneumonia
Nasal obstruction
Ear pain
Chronic nasal congestion
Sore throat
Otitis media (ear infections)
Sinusitis
Chronic nasal congestion
Vocal cord nodules
Chronic laryngitis
Laryngomalacia
Apnea
Subglottic stenosis
Arytenoid fixation
Laryngospasm
Recurrent pharyngitis
Chronic cough
Exacerbation of asthma or reactive airway disease

The only symptom I have is fluid in my ear and It doesn't mention chest pain.

Hi

..." have been to the dr. in the past and it seems the ear pain is from fluid in my left ear"......

Did they(Doc's) say why you have this recurring problem of "fluid" in your left ear???---that has been going on---since you were 18????

Nope... I shouldn't say it happens every couple of months...maybe 3-4 times a year is more accurate and it probably skipped a few years somewhere in there or it just wasn't painful enough to warrant me remembering. I specifically remember it when I was 18 though since I had went to the "urgent care" place since I thought I had an ear infection and with it came the chest pain. It seems to be happening more frequently in the past couple of years though.

I haven't been swimming (although I do shower!), and don't have sinus problems, so who knows. In the winter if I have a cold, the fluid is in both ears and I have constant pressure in them, but I don't get colds too often.

Of course now I no longer have health insurance, so I can't see a specialist about it, so I was just looking to see if anyone knew if chest pain normally is associated with ear problems.

Hi

Well speaking only for me...nope....since I have been on this board...your the first....with "chest pain" associated with "ear problems"...that I can remember......however...

Sorry about the insurance bit

---but----It seems kind of strange...that something that has been going on for so long and reoccurs so often remains without a "Dx"

----it would seem that if you could get a decent "Dx" and fix for the "fluid" thing...the chest stuff would disappear....along with it.....strange......????

Perhaps...or it could be a heart problem that makes the ear hurt......???

Re: Fluid in Ear and Chest Pain

no heart probs dont cause ear pain, a type of reflux would, pet is patulous eustachian tubes, eustachian tube dysfunction can also be caused by acid.
either way it needs to be addressed, so go get that part checked, because that would cause both, trust me i have both. good luck lib
