chronic labyrinthitis and flying - Inner Ear Disorders Message Board

So I got diagnosed with viral labyrinthitis a year and a half ago. I'm a lot better but still get occasional dizziness, ear fullness, fluid, hearing loss etc. I have good days and bad. I have not been on a plane since I was diagnosed. The thought of being stuck somewhere with exacerbated symtpoms terrifies me. Has anyone had any experiences either negative or positive with lab. and flying? The pressure could trigger a horrible attack, but I don't want to be grounded the rest of my life!

me too! i'm flying at the end of april and losing my mind. i'm terrified! and i don't scare easily (i say this as i play with my spider

) i'm absolutely beside myself about this. my doctor gave me valium incase i lose it in the air. are you going some where too, or just inquiring?

I'm just inquiring, but hopefully I'll be going somewhere soon. If I can get over my fear! I never did like flying, but now EEK. The initial virus is so far gone, but I get such weird lingering symptoms every so often.

I would take some Lorazepam(atavan) to fly, but I'm taking zoloft right now and I'm not sure if I can take both at once.

Hi Loralei,

I really think you'll be just fine (you too Anastasia). I flew around the world last year and was still quite ill. It didn't really make things much worse but I do know something that did and have only just realised it since buying an ipod. I experienced some terrible panicky feelings all the time I was watching a movie on the plane. I now know it was the headphones that did it to me - had no idea at the time. Also, I highly recommend earplugs to kill the drone of the engines in your head. Seems like quiet was all that I needed.

I've taken diazapam on a number of occasions. I'm on Cipramil and absolutely no problem.

Didnt have a v positive experience flying with this am afraid and dont want to dishearten you - but everyone is different - I think short flights are generally ok.
