I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

I appreciate any assistance, comments, or advise that anyone can give me.

For two months I have been experiencing severe, chronic right ear pain. The pain I experience is a burning sensation over the outer ear and it hurts to the touch and a sharp drilling pain deep within my ear. The ear area is tender during episodes of severe pain and subsides immediatley when the acute pain passes.

I have been to the emergency room once and then to a regular physician. I have had three Doctors look at me, they baffled because I do not have any ear infections and have had blood test ran with everything coming out ok. I visit the dentist regular and so there isn't any problems with my teeth causing problems. I did have one dr. mention maybe having TMJ but my dentist say's that he dosn't believe I have that.

There have been day's when I have no pain at all but when I turn my head to the left I can feel the pain in my right ear.

Does anyone know what could be causing this or what I might have?

Thank you for any advise you might have to offer.

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Taji882002
Sorry to hear about your ear pain. I have occasional ear pain and it goes right through me, it is horrible.
In the end it turned out to be due to my wisdom teeth growing through. Of course this was while they were in the gums so I was not able to link it up for ages. I had to just take strong painkillers and that was that. I hope you have more success.

Just wanted to say that this board is more to do with inner ear disorders. There may be people on here who can help but you may also want to post on another board - Im not sure if there is an outer ears board or something like that.
Hope you find the answers and get painfree quick.

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Tesss,
Thank you for your response. I mostly am experencing sharp pain deep inside my ear. I also get the sharp stabbing pain on the outside as well.
I know that you mentioned wisdom teeth. I had all of mine pulled when I was 18 that was 13 years ago. I think I will end up going to an ear specialist pretty soon.

Do you still recomend trying another board?

Thank you
Tammy

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Tammy,

I had an ear infection the first week of January 2005. It cleared up within a week but about 2 1/2 weeks later I ended up in this world of a nightmare with severe pressure in my ear and head as well as headache and all kinds of other ear symptoms. The bottom line is I get ear pain mostly in my left ear (the opposite ear I had the ear infection in). It is a sharp burning pain that can last a few seconds to all day and comes and goes. Somedays I have it, some I don't. I've had my ears checked a million times and there is no sign of infection. Has to be something inner ear. Maybe yours is a virus and will eventually work its way out of your ear.

I also know that Jill on this board gets a burning pain in her ear too and she says it goes down her face and neck. She has also been told there is no infection.

Do you have any other symptoms?

Hope your better soon.

Gloria

P.S. - Hi ya Tesss. Just wondering if your vision is any better? My dizziness is just about gone but I still have all the other ear symptoms (vision, tinnitus, headache, blah, blah, blah). I was just wondering because I know you are a few months ahead of me so if your vision is better maybe mine will get there soon. Are you still having dizziness too? I hope your doing well!

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Tammy
I guess its not your wisdom teeth then!
In answer to your qustion about the other board, I am sure there used to be another board for ears but I could not find it. So I hope you get the help on this one.

Just a thought - do you have any old car crash injuries in your neck or tense neck muscles - I know that can cause referred pain in your ears - maybe a nerve is inflammed or something like that. When you turn your head you may be pulling on a nerve or inflamed muscle???
I think going to an ear specialist may be wise. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Gloria, good to hear from you. I have been feeling much better since I got back from holiday, driving more and feeling good. Funnily enough though today I do not feel good, I had some spins last night and feel hot and cold. I think I am coming down with something and its having an effect on the dizyness. The vision stuff has calmed down but if I spend too long at a computer screeen then I start to feel bad again. Im doing a lot more balance stuff to try to get my balance good - balancing on one leg with eyes closed, don't know if its helping but I started to improve after doing this. I have had a lot of tinnitus recently also.

Sorry this is so long, my theorey is that the dizzyness goes first and then the other symptoms are more apparant (and may be more troublesome). I think its a good sign that the dizzyness has gone and shows that you are improving. Do you still do the vrt?

Best wishes
Tesss

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Tammy,

Yes I do get that burning pain in my ear too but I still don't know what it is caused from. I get fluctuating pressure and pain. If the pressure is bad I don't have the pain and if the pressure is not bad I have the terrible burning pain deep in the right ear going down the side of my face and neck but I am dizzy or lightheaded all the time. I sure hope you can get some answers and feel better real soon. Please keep us posted.

Jill

PS Hi Gloria, I've been thinking about you and hoping you are feeling better!

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Tesss,

To be honest, I really haven't been keeping up with the VRT. After I got a cold and set me off a few weeks ago, I kinda having been doing it like I should. I'm going to start doing it more. I hope your right that the dizziness goes and then the rest starts to go. My eyes don't feel as squashed (cross-eyed) but I am definitely not seeing like I use to yet. Hopefully soon. I think I hate that the most. Glad your seeing improvements. I don't know weather to hope that you are or are not coming down with a cold. I'd hate for you to get a cold, but at least if it is a cold you know that it is not the labs acting up. Anyway, I hope you feel better and it was just that you were having one of those days yesterday. It is weird; I feel differently each day. I never feel great but somedays I feel better than others.

Crazy your getting tinnitus now after so long. Did you have it at all before? I had mine the whole time (well it actually started about 6 weeks into this ordeal). I still pray it goes away because I really can't stand it. It sounds sorta like when you turn on the water in the sink (that ssshhhhing kind of noise it makes). What does yours sound like? Take care and feel better. It has been raining all day here (Yuk).

Hi Jill - I've been wondering how you are with your 2 year mark coming up. Any better for you at all? I feel differently every day. Sometimes worse than other days and never fully recovered. I go for that meniere's test next month but I know it is not meniere's. The good news is that the dizziness seemed to settle. Unfortunately, I am still dealing with headache, weird vision, some fullness (does seem to be getting better) the burning pain (almost always in the left ear which is the opposite one that I had the ear infection in) and that awful tinnitus.

I've been trying to stay off the boards a little because it seems to upset me sometimes and I really need to keep my mental health under control.

Anyway, I'm hoping since I haven't spoken to you in a while that you have seen some improvement. Take care and as always here is a big hug. - Gloria

Hi Tammy - thought I'd say hello to you too since we kind of took over your posts. I hope you are feeling better today. Do you have any other symptoms other than the burning pain? Take care - Gloria

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Gloria,

I'm glad to hear you are feeling a little better. Any bit of improvement is great and maybe with the dizziness going away the rest won't be far off. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I hope you do well with your menieres test. Please let us know how it comes out. Like I said, I had that test too and it was positive in my left ear and inconclusive in the right ear. Its the right ear that is giving me all the trouble. This whole thing is just so crazy and unpredictable.

I am doing okay but I like you never feel 100%. I too have some good days and some really, really bad days. I just want this to be over now. On October 27th it will be my two year mark and if I don't feel better by then I won't know what to do. Everyday I wonder how I've made it through another day with this horrible stuff. The worst part is not knowing when it will ever end.

Thanks again for thinking of me and I am sending a big hug your way too! I hope you feel 100% real soon.

Jill

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Jill - You are so sweet. I hope when you hit that two year mark it will be like that lady you met at the mall that had the problem for 2 years then it just went away. I'm crossing my fingers for you.

Howie on the boards said he had that test too and his was positive for meniere's. It is on one of the posts (sorry I can't remember which one, but I think I posted it and he replied). Also, I could have sworn he at one time said he never had full ears and his dizziness was kind of like mine, a strange feeling. I believe he never had an episode of spinning vertigo either. (Howie correct me if I am wrong.) So I think the test can show to be positive and that isn't necessarily what is wrong.

Anyway, I'm crossing my fingers for you. Have a good night.

Gloria

You are sweet too and I really enjoy our chats. My family is really sick of talking about it and they really don't understand. I just appreciate everyone on this board and their kindness. It just too bad we have to meet such nice people this way.

Thanks again and feel better soon!

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Hi Gloria
I know that I responded to your other post but just to answer your questions on here.
The cold seemed to be the cause of the dizzyness, it was really bad on Sunday and Monday and gradually reduced - not gone but better, and I have had a touch of a cold. This was not a bad cold so I am dreading when I get a worse one.
It is odd about the tinnitus. It just sounds like a high pitched buzzing. Maybe I am just noticing it more now, maybe my head was so filled with the dizzyness that I just screened it out - I don't know. I hope its a sign that the ear is mending.

I think you are right to stay off the boards a little bit and not do too much research. it gets tiring and also I used to do that a lot too and I think it made me brood on it more.
Nice to 'talk' to you, hope you are feeling better and you don't get any more colds.

Tammy, how are you doing now - has the ear pain gone or have you been to see anyone about it?

Best wishes
Tesss

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Is the burning pain over the lobe, and/or floppy cartilage area? or over the part directly attached to your head? The most common ear pain is related to muscle pain in the jaw (the joint is a few centimeters in front of your ear). If you've already had an infection ruled out, I would suggest trying heat and relaxation techniques. I have had extensive jaw problems for years (eventually requiring several reconstructive surgeries), and my muscle spasms are extremely painful, and occur in areas you might not think of as being heavy on muscles. Touching a muscle that is in spasm is agonizing. I am not at all suggesting your problem is the same as mine, just wanted you to know that I've spent WAY too much time and pain researching TMJ anatomy and pathologies, so I have a pretty good grasp of the jaw/ear area. There are many, many muscles everywhere in your face, neck, throat, etc. (there are actually muscles that span from your temple to your larynx!) The simplest test would be to 'treat' it like a spasm--with heat, etc. and see if that affects the pain at all. If it does not touch the pain even a little, I'd have an ENT check you out, and if he clears you, see a oral-maxillofacial specialist (they're more likely to really understand TMJ disorders than regular docs or dentists). When all else fails, doing your own research (google scholar is reliable and rules out sites not based in science) at least gives a sense of control over the problem. Good luck with your pain! Maybe it'll just pass and not be a bother.

Re: I am experiencing ear pain but have no ear infection

Not sure if you still are checking since it has been a couple months since your question, but just incase.... Is it the cartillage of your ear that hurts? (e.g., when the pain flares it hurts to touch the outside, put a phone to your ear, or lay on that side) I received a diagnosis after having (quite severe at times) external ear pain, burning, and sometimes redness. Have you ever had it on the other ear or your nose? I won't bore you with the details unless this sounds similar to yours ! I hope that you haven't had another spell since your last post and that it has resolved. If not, please respond.
