Unhappy 5 Year Imbalance Help needed

I am wondering if anyone is suffering as i am.I have had constant imbalance, feeling drunk for approx 5-6 years.I finally got to see a ENT specialist who sent me for an MRI,caloric balance test and a audiogram hearing test.
The mri did not show anything, the hearing test showed a slight degradation of hearing in my right ear and the balance showed a differing result in my right ear also.
The ENT spec told me i have assymtry and my right balance nerve has some damage, this causes me to feel constantly imbalanced(not vertigo),legs feel like their walking in a different direction.
Has anybody else got this problem and if so what are they doing to help themselves or what medication are you taking

Thank You for any replies

Hi

Yes what you deascribe is vestibular dysfunction - often caused by a virus - commonly called labyrinthitis. I got this 3 years ago and have the same imbalance and also dizziness 24/7. The "cure" for this is vestibular rehab therapy which is no quick fix but aims to re-train the brain to compensate for the inner ear problem, by use of exercises. Medication can be a short term but not long term treatment. It is said to hinder the brain compensation so VRT is favoured. Ask your ENT if he/she provides this service. If you are in the Uk we can provide you with someone who does.

Hi

...."The mri did not show anything, the hearing test showed a slight degradation of hearing in my right ear and the balance showed a differing result in my right ear also"....

..." ENT spec told me i have assymtry and my right balance nerve has some damage, this causes me to feel constantly imbalanced(not vertigo),"....

..."Has anybody else got this problem"....

Just about all of us---in one form or another...

...."what are they doing to help themselves or what medication are you taking"...

Most are doing Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy(VRT) forcing the brain to compensate for the injury(see the "sticky" post--information archive above)---has the ENT prescribed that for u?

---a medication to cure it is not available---yet........

If u work ur way down through the items in the "Sticky" post---u will get a good picture/advise/info on what is available and what u can do---to help ur self...think I would play close attention to the item in the sticky post called "Chronic Dizziness"

That research paper---highlights---C/L post---and as she says "no quick fix"...unforgently---how true.....

Thank you for yourprompt replies and advice,i have taken betahistine and stemitil which did not do anything for my symptoms.
I do have an appointment in March 06 to see the ENT specialist and i will ask about the rehab therapy you have mentioned.

Thank You.
