Ringing in ears and inner itching!!!!

Oh my, will this ever stop?? I have had ringing in my ears for about 10 years. I went to an ear specialist who then basically told me to deal with it. And I have been trying my best ever since~. I think it is getting worse, and now my right ear makes low whistling sounds. Aslo, my right ear is freaking itchy inside all the time! I am constantly sticking a q-tip in there to itch!! And I realise doing that is pretty damaging, however it is so satisfying!!!
Does anyone know if the ringing could get worse? And what is causing this empowering itch? Or does anyone know anything that could benefit me at all?

Re: Ringing in ears and inner itching!!!!

I know how you feel with the tinnitus. I've had it about 10 - 11 months now and wonder if it will go away. I couldn't imagine 10 years of it.

Anyway, I've done a lot of research on this and here is what sums it up

25% of cases it goes
50% of cases it improves
25% of cases the tinnitus stays the same

I also read that it is most likely not to get any worse than it already is only better. I'm not sure how reliable the information is but I read this on a few websites and my neurotogist told me that for most people tinnitus does eventually resolve itself.

How is your hearing? Maybe one of those tinnitus masker that are like hearing aids will benefit you. My doctor said I couldn't use them as my hearing is very very good (after 3 hearing tests). Above normal range and it would create too much noise in my ears and cause hearing problems.

The itching in the ear could be a sign of infection. Have you had that checked. My mother in law had an ear infection prior to me getting ill and her ear was very itchy. I'd get it checked out if you haven't already.

I hope you feel better. I know how maddening the tinnitus can be. It has almost drove me into a crazy home a few times.

Best,
Gloria

Re: Ringing in ears and inner itching!!!!

Tinnitus is different than that crackling noise you hear when swallowing. I have both although the crackling noise is pretty much gone as I said in the other post. Tinnitus on the other hand is much worse. It is a noise you hear within your ears or head that can resemble things like the noise crickets make, a hissing, buzzing or bell ringing kind of a sound. What people interpret as a noise is really ones own opinion. You'd know if you had tinnitus.

I believe your crackling is quite different than the tinnitus we talk about. It is not an infection but rather the sound of something going on inside your head or ears. It can be damage to the little hairs in your inner ear or just the way blood is flowing through your ear. It can be caused by many things that are unknown to the doctors.

How did your crackling start and do you have any other symptoms? You can get crackling with effusion tube dysfunction too. Have you recently had a cold?

Re: Ringing in ears and inner itching!!!!

Thanks Gloria, I hope you dont have to live with tinitus for too long! For me, the noise became a normal thing to hear, so it doesnt bother me anymore. Like when you get a buzzing fridge, you eventually get used to it.
I could very well have an infection, I will definately get that checked out. Thank you.
And to Chris, I also have this crackling when I swallow! If you find out what is causing it, please let me know.

Re: Ringing in ears and inner itching!!!!

Hi Genevievespring. I have never experienced tinnitus but -- boy Oh boy -- I can relate to the itching!

Both my ears are so itchy. They also feel as if something is draining out of them ... sort of like there is oil slowly draining out. Nothing appears on Q-tips. It drives me nuts!

I also stick things in there just to try to quench the itch (Q-tips, my car keys, my fingernails, LOL)! I know that's not a good thing to do but I can't help it.

So many people have looked in there and said "Nope, no infection." Can an infection go un-noticed?
