Violent vomiting

Hello -I'm not sure if this is an inner ear thing or what's causing it, but I'm genuinely concerned. My mother has, on three separate occasions now, been feeling perfectly fine and then out of nowhere has gotten violently ill and throws up for hours. Then after a day or so she's back to normal. Twice it was accompanied by an awful headache but this last time the headache didn't appear. Could this be an inner ear thing?

Re: Violent vomiting

Hi
Sorry to hear about your mother. If your mother is a bit older it is probably wise to make sure she has a full check-up, bloodwork etc. to rule out anything unpleasant.

However, what you describe sounds exactly like migraine. Much of my migraines as a child, and even now, occur without headache but include nausea and vomiting. Migraine without headache is very common. It can also be easily treated with abortive medications - in fact that is one very good way of determining if the diagnosis is correct. Abortive drugs such as sumatriptan (Imitrex) can abort a migraine in progress in most cases.

Re: Violent vomiting

If this is a relatively new occurence, you need to get your mom to a doctor. Not to scare you, but my mother started getting headaches and vomiting, and turned out to have a brain tumor. The good news is many brain tumors are easily removed nowadays. In any event I would say an MRI is warranted.
