Exclamation dizzy, nausea, can't drive, can't get help

HI. I'm new here. I have been having health issue for 6 years. Nothing major. CFS, Fibromyalgia. Hypoglycemia, P.O.O.S. anemia, and chronic sinus, IBS, Orthstatic intolerance. I say nothing major kind of sarcastically, because that's generally what doctor's think. Though I have no life because of all of these things.
Of all of the horrible symptoms I have I think the worst is the dizziness and nausea I have regularly. Most times I can not drive. If someone else drives I get car sick. If I do manage to get out, I usually can't stay out long and mostly don't enjoy myself because I feel kind of sick anyway.
The thing is i have gone to ent's allergists, basically tried all the drugs they hav for sinus or allergies, over the counter and prescription.
I had surgery to remove a deviated septum.I had ear tubes put in at this time because i had fluid in my ears.
nothings seems to help. I'm constantly feeling pressure in my head. Headaches, dry sinuses. dry eyes, Dizziness, and the worst nausea. I hate being stuck in the houe so much but i can't stand feeling like I' just got off of the worst carnival ride ever.
I have told th GP this several times. he just gives me a new sinus pill or floanase or something.
Then he send me to the ENT. H tried the meds ..again, the surgery, and then I keep telling how major this dizziness is and how bad it affects my life..So he gives me another pill that doesn't work. Last time he says I'll send you to a neurologist..which makes me nervous because i have been t one before. All he did was take a MRI. give me a hearing test and one other vision test and said I was fine neurologically. SO what does that mean..I couldn't even drive myself there . how is that fine?
I'm frustrated because i don't understand the whole inner ear thing myself. Like is this a sinus issue, could it be something else. Because of having so many problems I've been tested for everything , so I think they would have found it if It were a disease causing it.
right now 'm just looking to understanding this thing so i can do something about it. The doctrs just throw pills at me, and shove me out the door.If i could pick their brains and they got the full picture of what was going on with me exactly maybe i could get help but unfortunately that's not the way they work.so here i am.

I seem to having trouble with dryness, although I drink plenty of water. I have dry skin dry eyes, and dry sinuses. SO I now take something called Ponaris which the ENT suggested. It's natural oils an it does help the dryness somewhat.
ALso I feel stuffed up all of the time. or rather have pressure in my head, my nose and ears. I don't know if that's cause from the dryness or inflammation. still I tried drugs that were supposed to help inflammation and they didn't help.

I have a few questions if someone cares to answer..
How do you know what kind of problem you have?
I mean I read about sinusitis, inner ear, vestibular problems, vertigo, I'm confuse as to what I have.
What kind of doc treats vestibular problems, and what kind of tests do they do?
If you don't have a specific disease are there docs that still treat the symptoms?

I really don't know what to do at this point. I hear about vertigo but i don't think i have that cause it says you have spells . I have this most of the time. It just gets better or worse.
I don't' know what kind of doctor to see about this, and I also want to make sure they really investigate this. i want to make sure i know my stuff so i can ask questions and make sure they do whatver tests they can do. Also I want to know what other drugs there are besides sinus and allergy meds..or any natural things that might help.
AS you can tell I'm a bit desperate, but i'm frustrated ..which means I now have to educate myself and work on getting the docs to do their jobs. so I'm hoping some of you might have suggestions. Any help welcome.
( please excuse the poor typing but i am having trouble reading at the moment and can't really proofread what I'm writing.)

Cool Re: dizzy, nausea, can't drive, can't get help

Hi Sue

The best place to read/bone up on vestibular probs is at this web site:

http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/index.html

It is Doc/Prof Hain's web site--of Northwestern Univ---located in the "information archive"(sticky) first post on this board.

It will take u---from the very beginning through the more exotic---I would start with:

"Dizziness -- broadly

An overview of dizziness
Evaluation of the dizzy patient (for clinicians)
Dizziness in the elderly (English) Korean version
Unlocalized dizziness and ataxia
Understanding your dizziness and balance disorder DVD (2006)"

First part---and move on to the:

" Dizziness or vertigo caused by inner ear problems"

" Dizziness caused by Neurological Problems"

" Dizziness caused by low blood pressure."

" Hearing problems, Miscellaneous -- mainly situational or symptom dizziness, Treatment of Vertigo & Testing for Hearing and Balance problems"

When u finish with that---u'll be ready for them---them are:

"NEUROTOLOGIST"

They are the Doc's who are trained in the vestibular and it's connection & functioning with the brain(ur brain)

These Doc's are Neurologists who continue training for another three years(usually under a fellowship)specializing in the vestibular/brain integration and its functions.

That/this will take some time---to learn--but it is well worth it---to either nail it as the reason for ur probs---or---eliminate it as the cause.

Re: dizzy, nausea, can't drive, can't get help

Babu357, my problems sounds alot like yours and I'm between and rock and a hard place. I have several other problems like chronic fatique, fatty liver,IBS,etc. I've had a really rough time for about two years I think anxiety probably plays a big role. My problem is I'm having problems driving from a funny feeling(weird and with pressure) in my head. This is getting to be a major problem for me. I feel that moving faster in the car makes a difference, I'm not always dizzy, just sometimes feel a little off balanced.
The doctor I see thinks it's from anxiety, since I've been under a lot of stress.
Sometime I get headaches for about 2 weeks that nearly drive me crazy, it's still the feeling in my head. I think it's gonna be a sinus infection coming on and it isn't. I have cracking and popping in my sinus area, too. I can't take alot of medicines because they make me sick, this is the hard part. I used to take antidepressants and they helped other problems but I stayed sick to my stomach. The doctor tried putting me on predisone to break the cycle of problems I was having, one pill and it hurt my stomach so bad, & antibiotics the same way, now. I take ativan, and Dramamine which helps the sickness and dizziness. I saw a specialist ear doctor and he prescribed Valium but I couldn't take that. If you havn't tried an antidepressant it might help you, don't know, just ask your doctor. I would like to hear what helps you in the future. I don't know if you try to work or not, but I'm having a hard time with it myself and not being able to do much. Thinking I'm gonna take some time off and see if it helps or not. I drove somewhere last night about 30 minutes away and I thought I wasn't going to make it home....prayed to get home safely, it was like bad inner ear dizziness and I don't feel so well today , either. Take care!

Wow you do sound a lot like me.
I also have had a problem with depression an d anxiety. I had gone through a major depression as a young adult, but really I was feeling the best I had in years, emotionally, when I first got sick.
I do believe that years of past stress might have weakned my system. BUt i really wasn't depressed or anxious until after I got sick this time. Going through all of this and getting passed from doc to doc, getting mistreated by docs, and getting no help for years have produced new anxieties. ( not that all docs are bad. I have found a wonderful and compassionate gyno. he talks and listens. it's amazing I wish all docs were like him).
Unfortunately most doctors blame anxiety for everything. In my case I know when i am feling well physically the emotional stuff follows. It' s really the illness that gets me down.
However I still see a therapist that helps me cope with all of this, and i take an antidepressant. I see a psychiatryst for that. I don't like taking deression medcation from a regular doc. I feel a psychiatryst is a better judge of what is good for me, when it comes to that sort of meds.
Are you seing a therapist? If you belive that the anxiety is actually causing some of these problems it could help. You have to find the right one of course. BUt it can take a load of anxiety off just talking with someone who'll listen and understand.IF you can find someone that uses cognitive threrapy that's good also.
BUt don't forget that you have real problems. I belive sometimes doctors do that when thye dont' know how to treat you, and they'll tell you this is anxiety and that is anxiety because well then they don't have to treat it. Just hand you an antidepressant. It's just easeir to blame eveything on depression or anxiety.
When i first got sick that's all they'd say ,and I was like ,'but i'm not depressed, I think I would would know if I was depressed'. it got me very frustrated. Only you know how much a role your anxiety plays in your illness though. IF you too think anxiety plays a role in creating physical problems then it's definately important to treat that. Years ago before i got sick, when i had a really bad problem with anxiety, I used to go to a support group. that was very helpful.
NO I am no longer able to work. I just have too many problems. Right now I just want to be able to get out into the public again. I'm stuck inside too much. Im trying a new drug Lexapro for my Menstrual problems. So we''ll see if that helps. Though i still have to get the dissyness under control to drive.
I too have trouble with tolerating pills. I've tried a lot that provided no relief but plenty of side effects. I think i will try Dramamie That's a good idea . it's something i can try myself.
I am going to see a new ENT. Hopefully he might be the type that will listen and help me figure out what is acutally wrong rather than just trying to hand me pills. I think i will bring a list of questions I have , and have him answer them before i leave.
Otherwise I might just forget eveything and wind up outside the office door going 'what just happened?' as usuall .lol
Thanks for writing and i hope things get better for you.
Sue

Re: dizzy, nausea, can't drive, can't get help

Hi, it's me again, Sue. Thanks a mil for getting back to me. I feel like no one has the problem(s) I've been having. I've been wondering if anyone out there would ever be close to my problems, not to wish them on anyone, either.
Really everything started with me nine yrs.ago when I started through the change, I'm now 54. I started from day one, having bad bad panic attacks.
The same happened with my stomach changing, too. I've been too afraid to go on trips (would love to) just afraid I'll be sick and want to get home. Most people would probably handle this, I just don't want to be around people when I'm sick and especially sick to my stomach. I guess this was sick nervous spells. I have been so sick that I couldn't began to want to move in a car, and that's strange feeling. I need therapy(talk) I know and I worry about money. I thought about ordering the anxiety/depression program by Lucinda Bassett, if you know who I mean. I've gotten so phobic in a lot of areas in my life, afraid I'll get sick and then don't know what I can take to help me, etc. I use to go to church, and I still need God really bad, and I pray alot, whether people understand or not. I don't know how old you are but I wondered if you are starting through menopause or perimenopause. I started having lots of problems then, not as bad as when it totaling ended.
I have depended on dramamine alot and they have a less drowsy formula, too.
I got up today with dizziness again, but doing better this evening. Wonder if naturral stuff like ginger would help you? I just think hormones plays such a part, too. Please keep me informed about how you do and if anything starts helping you better. I feel like I'm never gonna be alright, but need to keep the faith, I know. This week is getting to me, the last minute stress of Christmas. I know someone needs to help me with ideas, because I have a hard time making decisions. Are you on disability for this? I know some people are...I'm telling you that when you can't sleep and function well your life is in a turmoil. Are you able to sleep well? I wish I could sleep straight through , and get 8 hrs. I can make it on 6 hrs. but it's usually broken up sleep. If I take sleeping pills I feel awful, usually. I think if I could just sleep I would be a new person. Please, if any answers for you would like to know. I say prayers for all our forum boards, cause so many people are just misable with health problems, bless their hearts.
I may talk to our area counselers, I just don't know what to do, my doctor says to if it would seem help me. One thing I know, my problems started I feel as physical at first, and then emotional. I think one leads to the other, hand in hand. Thanks so much for writing back, so nice to have friends like this!!!! Hope to hear back from you and I wish for you a great Christmas!

Re: dizzy, nausea, can't drive, can't get help

Just a thought. A family friend was just diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome. This affects all of the areas that have moisture and other things as well. You can google it for more info. Its often under/misdiagnosed with MS, lupus etc. My family friend had received two diagnoses of MS and then a third doc said it wasn't. A new doc has diagnosed her with this. Her primary symptoms were dizziness and imbalance. Given your other problems I thought I would share this. Its worth looking into. She's going to see a good rheumatologist to follow up.

Good luck!
